Just wondering how much of a difference a .io domain has made to your side project

Just wondering how much of a difference a .io domain has made to your side project

The .com domain I am looking for is taken, the only one available is .io

Does a .io domain make a difference? any thoughts?

.io is great but I think in most cases if you can get the .com that is the way to go.

My day job is a $5bn company, we're at www.pivotal.io

Doesn't seem to have any impact on us

From an SEO point of view the standard rules apply. No difference to other top level domains. It's simply the human element that you need to factor in for memorability.

I bought the .com for coderpad.io after we started with .io, and never switched to .com. In practice it hasn't seemed to matter at all.

I manually navigated to coderpad and had pause for a moment when trying to recall if it was .io or .com. I thought it a bit odd that it was still at .io.

      1. 1

Yeah, we just redirect from .com in case you remember wrong.

Honestly, it does not matter technically. It only matters from the perspective of ease of recall, and the way it rolls off the tongue. Mind you if someone has the .com just make sure they are in a very different industry. You wouldn't want to confuse clients trying to find you and winding up at a competitors site :)

Working fine for me with https://www.checkbot.io/. 😄I don't think it matters at all to be honest. If your product is for tech savvy people, I think they're more than used to it for products aimed at them now.

  7. 2

I think it matters who your target market is. If you're targeting customers who are generally tech savvy I don't think it is necessary to have the .com

None really. .io is a great TLD

  9. 1

Is your .com domain taken by a competitor, taken by an unrelated product, or just squatted?

    1. 1

Just squatted, the current owner is not responsive as well

I always try to remind people of the poor reliability of .io domains on such posts: https://hackernoon.com/stop-using-io-domain-names-for-production-traffic-b6aa17eeac20

There are also numerous posts regarding issues with the .io TLD: https://hn.algolia.com/?query=io domain&sort=byPopularity&prefix&page=0&dateRange=all&type=story

So depending on what kind of business you're building and how critical it is, this could be a crucial choice.

Just find an alternative and go with .com always !

I haven't noticed any issues but it's just my consulting site and most of my clients are somewhat technical. I think it's fine.

Two reasons I only use .com now

    • First is if .com is taken how much of your traffic ends up at .com if you have .io (even search results may include .com which is not your site.)
    • Second is .com is almost muscle memory for most consumers unless they are in tech space.

I was in the same boat, only options were .io or .co.

People seemed to confuse .co with .com, so ended up getting workcapsule.io and haven't had any issues.

.io is great, as long as the .com is not confusing for people. In most cases, people are going to get to your website via a link o a website or google your service. Just make sure you pop on top of Google.
