80% Bot Traffic? Why You Should Verify Website Traffic Before Investing

I just spent 3 hours auditing a “high-traffic” website someone was selling.

On paper, it looked great:

→ 50K monthly visits
→ Strong engagement metrics
→ Impressive Google Analytics charts

Then I ran the traffic through a bot traffic detector.

The result?

Around 80% of the traffic was coming from a single datacenter IP range.

The “website” wasn’t really a business.

It was basically a dashboard generating traffic numbers.

That reminded me of a painful lesson from my own experience.

I once spent $4,000 on a domain with supposedly great traffic, only to discover that roughly 90% of it was referral spam.

That mistake changed how I evaluate websites.

Now, before I make an offer on a website, I verify the traffic quality first.

I look for:

🔹 Datacenter IP activity
🔹 Suspicious user agents
🔹 Abnormal session patterns
🔹 Referral spam
🔹 Geographic inconsistencies
🔹 Traffic-to-conversion discrepancies

It usually takes only a few minutes, but it can prevent thousands of dollars in mistakes.

This isn't just relevant when buying websites.

If you're:

• Buying a site on Flippa
• Evaluating an acquisition
• Building an SEO business
• Investing in backlinks
• Buying an expired domain
• Running paid traffic

Don't assume traffic is real just because the analytics dashboard looks impressive.

50K visits mean very little if those visitors aren't potential customers.

Real visitors browse, engage, subscribe, contact you, and eventually buy.

Bots mostly create impressive charts.

Verify the audience before you value the asset.

Curious: What's your process for checking traffic quality before buying a website? Have you ever been burned by fake or low-quality traffic?
