Personally I think the best way to see what people think is to gauge interest (I chose to do that using a landing page https://mailchi.mp/4bbb6d2014ba/zuppacomingsoon ) and then giving them an actual product to try out. I read the article you linked and I can see the benefits of doing something big to generate hype, but I don't like the idea of doing a fake anything. I'd rather make my fans a promise and then deliver as soon as possible :)
Honestly, thinking about your business, I would take a couple of very well affirmed recipe apps/websites (I suppose there are many good ones) and from them start selecting recipes already good for certain allergies, and promote them through your channels (FB page, FB group, newsletter, IG, ecc). Maybe switching one or two ingredients if necessary. Then, when you have your thousands followers, you can automate the searching process through that apps/websites through yours. And if you do a good job they will buy your business.
To me seems like a better deal for you and your users.

That's a great idea, thank you you! I admit that I've bee holding off on creating social media for Zuppa until I had more of a product to sell but I suppose that if I'm putting my product out there, may as well go all the way, right? ;)
