Ask IH: How would you promote it?

I launched the first two issues of MindfulDevMag recently, the Mindful Moments Reminder and a bit more on the same site. Roughly 50 to 60 Downloads in total of the mag and 5 sales of the reminder app. Not that bad for only posting it once on PH and IH and three posts on HN. However, I am unsure on how to promo/distribute it more than purely relying on SEO (main channel).

Added the newsletter sign up after launching the first issue so I missed out on most of the potential sign ups.

It is driven by personal interest but I'd be happy if I can make money with it. However, right now I'd rather get it on peoples screens and get feedback. So now, I am evaluating promotion channels and have gone through the traction book. Many of the channels seem not to be a good fit or maybe I am just blind and don't know how e.g. Unconventional PR could work, or it feels like "spamming" blogs or forums (I know there is a nice way but I still need to overcome my weakness regarding that).

How would you promote it if it were your baby?

    1. Get excerpts or single articles from an issue posted elsewhere as a guest on blogs or ‘zines. Link back to your thing.

    2. Try getting your authors some interviews on podcasts looking for subjects. Stipulate that they promote the mag if you do the ground work-three way win.

    3. Post pull quotes from the articles on twitter tagged appropriately.

    4. I haven’t seen the magazine, but if there is art or illustrations, you could do the pull quote thing over some shots of that on an Instagram channel or Pinterest board. Once again, tag appropriately.

Two things a stand out to me. Firstly, you’ve got some market response. It’s not bonkers, but it wasn’t crickets either, so with some iteration or better exposure or probably just more of both, you could find that magical product market fit.

Secondly, I do a lot of content marketing (consultant) and the hard part is the content, and it seems like you have that. There are a million channels to get stuff out there these days. The problem is most of it sucks. If you have two issues in the can and more coming then you’re in good shape, especially if the quality is high. Have you gotten any feedback on the product?

Thanks for the tips. Using quotes from the articles sounds great. Was thinking about quote but not from that angle. Let's test if it works on twitter or pinterest.

Nope, haven't gotten feedback from readers yet.

Cool to see your mindfulness website and newsletter!

I'd promote it by using content marketing. Some stuff that is a fast read but helpful on its own:

    1. Infographic showing some pro tips on how to prepare your session for instance.
    2. Sharing some of those awesome quotes on social media with the right hashtags (#mindfulness #developerlife ....) to reach the right people.
    3. Share your free content and refer to your website in a subtle way.
    4. in mindfulness, yoga, zen , ... topics on platforms like facebook, reddit, linkedin, ... discuss how mindfulness for developers is a specific breed (if that is the case) and how you try to reach them or things like that. By bringing relevant discussions or give your insights on how to make developers mindful and/or what that would bring to the world will make it heard in those online groups.

To monetize, you could (if you're not doing it already) use Amazon affiliate links in your PDF's showing mindfulness related products that you yourself vowe by.

Or add a couple of sponsors/add spaces with "your add here? contact ..." to sell a couple of dedicated places in the document. But this would work more if you already have some traction and more people on your reading list.

Thanks. Considers sponsoring too but for that, I need way more readers, so that will move to the back.

Haven't considered infographics though. That sparks some ideas.

As you are the second one suggesting pulling quotes on social media., that's my next step.

You can even quote some nice lines from your own content. As long as they provide value people accept it. All the best.
