A $500 sponsored video on YouTube generated 130 signups in 2 days!

Paid advertising on YouTube has been very effective for us. So I decided to reach out to a few influencers to see if any would be interested in making a sponsored video mentioning our product. She made an incredible video and it has generated 130 signups in 2 days from a $500 investment!

I am blown away. We will be doing more influencer marketing on YouTube for sure! This may be the scalable and cost-effective growth channel that we were looking for!

Here's the video if you want to see what it looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StHTlhh5FsM&t=2s

Oh interesting, and I suspect you'll get leads over time too.

Congrats! Are the 130 signups for a free trial / account or for a paid product?

    1. 1

Free signups. We operate on a freemium model.

  3. 2

Did you tell her what to talk about, or did she write the script herself?

    1. 4

I’ve written a media kit that outlines the type of language to use and key capabilities to mention, but the details are really up to the person making the video.

Wow, this is a helpful tip for people trying to work with influencers- thanks for sharing!

      2. 1

That's interesting. Could you please forward a copy of the media kit?

    2. 1

I'm interesting to know this too :)

Hey! Just wanted to say thanks. Your Media Kit Template for influencers is really great!

Adapted it to my own needs, but it was a great outline to organize my ideas on what I want influencers to communicate about my product.
    Thanks for that!

$500 is a pretty steep price though. We've been getting over 70 video review on Youtube and noticed that in the beginning influencers as for $500, but after some negotiation, the price goes down to $50, in some cases even $25.

    1. 1

That’s great to know, thanks! Based on the signups and user engagement we are seeing, we’re more than happy to pay the $500.

Thats amazing results, been thinking of doing the same. Congrats!

  7. 1

Very cool. Curious to know, how much is a signup worth to you?

    1. 1

We operate on a freemium model where signup is free and premium is $50 per year. In the past we’ve seen 10-15% of signups convert to premium, but that was before we increased the subscription cost, so need to gather more data on new premium conversion rates.

      1. 1

Sorry to be a downer but is this really a highly successful campaign?

130 free signups x 10-15% conversion x $50 = $650-$975 in revenue (if 10-15% of people still subscribe to premium at the higher price of $50 as you say).

At a cost of $500, Google has taken the first 6 months of your revenue, if not the first year, for these customers.

Of course, they might have a high lifetime value - I have no idea. Or you might have high churn.

And yes, it's a good learning experience - more people into your funnel, more customers to learn from, etc..

If it were me, however, I'd be looking for more cost-effective channels rather than celebrating this one ... ? :)

        1. 1

$3.85 per signup is the lowest cost per signup that we’ve seen from any channel, so we are excited about the early results. The thing I really like is that these videos then become part of organic search results on YouTube. So more signups will continue coming in over time.

          1. 1

Well, it sounds like a step in the right direction. And yes, you might get some organic search. As I said, I didn't want to be a downer. I just hate seeing Google wipe most of the money off the table, taking it from the little guys like us.

Interesting. What other channels do you recommend that are more cost-effective? Thanks

          1. 1

I suggest reading the book 'Traction' by Gabriel Weinberg and Justin Mares. It lists about 17 channels which might work (at certain times) for your business.

            1. 1

I started reading it yesterday :p Was wondering what was your experience.

              1. 1

My first SaaS relied upon relationship-based sales and my current project isn't being marketed yet, sorry. But there's plenty of inspiration available from people in the IH podcast.

We’re focused on YouTube right now in a few different ways. Paid ads, influencer marketing, and posting our own organic tutorial videos to drive engagement among existing users.

We agreed on a multi-video deal, so we’re looking forward to doing more with the same person. We’ll def space them out with perhaps 30 days between videos so that it doesn’t feel unnatural for her audience.

I made a list of 40 influencers that fit the profile of what I was looking for and reached out to all of them. This was the first one to agree to work together. We have a few others in the works, so hopefully this strategy will prove repeatable.

The more established influencers have shared their media kit that outlines the rates, but yes, we were able to negotiate something that worked for both sides.

The prices we’ve seen have been all over the map, ranging from $25 CPM (cost per thousand views) to $100 CPM.

Some focus on overall subscriber numbers, but it seems more valuable to look at their last 5 videos to see average views, and also at engagement on each video (number of comments and likes). I’m happy to work with people that have smaller but highly engaged audiences.

Manual. Just did a bunch of relevant searches on YouTube to see who was making content relevant to those terms.
