A blog about building a blog

Some time ago I noticed there was money to be made on Medium. I joined the Medium Partner Program and moved some of my posts behind the metered paywall. Time to become a millionaire.

I quickly wrote a new blogpost and shared it on Reddit. This received some backlash as someone commented "Too bad you care about money more than sharing it. ¯\(ツ)/¯". That hurt, but it was also kinda true.

This sparked a thought in my head. I can just create my own blog. Maybe add some ads. And still become a millionaire. I can just blog about building a blog. Easy does it.

there's nothing wrong with starting out on Medium and then migrating to your own blog when you get a big enough following.

I know you're joking about becoming a millionaire, but doing it on Medium can have quite a few benefits. For starters, you have a strong domain, which makes it easier for SEO and you have an already huge amount of traffic on Medium.

And about this thing with the metered wall, you can generate a special "Friend Link" for each article which lets the readers will get to read for free. But kudos on starting the blog. I've done this 5 times, you have a long, long, long way ahead of you, so keep hustling.

    Happy New Year 🍾

You are completely right @Murakami. My posts on Medium were easily discovered without having to create a buzz. The posts on my blog are not.

Creating my own blog has been a lot of fun though and it gives me a lot of content to blog about so it is useful.

I'll see how long I can keep up.

Google did state that metered paywalls will play a role in SEO, but Medium isn't doing the basic metered paywall.

You have three articles per month that you can read and I've seen plenty of Medium content rank in SERP top 10.

And to answer your question - no, definitely no Google penalties. I think it's all about the domain. Big media publishers are okay in the eyes of Google to have gated content, small ones (and mostly spammy ones) - not so okay.
