Problem space:

While I watch, listen and read a lot educational topics that I’m interested in, I don’t get as much out of it at the end of the day as I hope. A few days later I can’t even recall key statements.

Also, I don’t want to watch an hour of a new Eric Ries YouTube video - just to find a small set of new and important information for my current situation.

Intermediate Solution

A few years ago, I realised that this is a problem for me. Since then, I take notes on pretty much everything I consume and find valuable. This definitely helped me remembering and internalising.

But it also has it's drawbacks: I need to actively open and read my notes and know already quite precise what I'm looking for in order to recall my learnings (e.g. which book or podacast show and Episode). Both things combined turned out to be a real bummer on my original problem.

Improved Solution

I'm a tech-person. So I threw a bit of tech on this.

I created a proper database of all key highlights (usually just one ore two sentences) with it's context, categorised them, grouped them into topic areas and made them searchable. Through that, I can now find much easier what I'm looking for while discovering similar takeaways.

But the daily benefit is what I get through a chrome extension I developed on top of this: Every time I open a new Chrome Tab I get presented with a random Highlight of a category I specified.

I started to make this public as I got asked by friends and colleagues. So here it is. You can check out the landingpage for working examples.
