A couple tips I’ve learned trying to get better at design

With the post a few days ago about ranking your skills in coding, design, and marketing, I thought I would share 2 tips I have learned these past few weeks as I have been trying to learn and practice design and UX. I’ve found myself giving these tips to a few people on IndieHackers the last few days so I thought I would just make it a post.

The first tip came from David (@manspaugh) who I have worked on several projects with.

  • Go on Dribbble.com and search for things that you like and use them as inspiration for your own designs.

By far this has been the most helpful piece of advice for learning and practicing design I have gotten. It is super practical and very easy to do. Figma is a free design tool rising in popularity. Download it and give it a shot.

The second piece of advice I would give:

  • Find a designer/UX expert to show your work to and ask for feedback from.

Having someone at minimum who can give feedback on your designs helps a lot to refine your work and learn what works and what doesn’t.

I hope this helps and good luck hacking!

I think a great one for UX is to look at existing services, and what design decisions they have made. If you were to take a look at how to design a booking system, look at places like booking.com or AirBnb, and try to identify why they have made those design decisions.

Larger companies have the people and the budgets to identify what works and what doesn't. Use them for UX help like you use Dribbble for UI.

Yeah, and to expound a little on that advice. Dribbble’s a great place to grab inspiration, but a pretty bad place for proper UX flies/ideas. So get inspired, stretch the creative side of your brain, focus on solving the problems your direct users have, and give them an experience that makes that word of mouth spread. 😉
