As another self-taught dropout, this really resonated with me. Going this path hasn't stopped me from becoming a manager/engineer/information-security architect. With motivation, time management and mentors a lot of doors can still be opened.

My schooling was very different from that of a poly-tech (journalism and media creation). I'm thankful for much of the experience because I grew as a writer and visual storyteller.

That said, I largely agree with you. College is obscenely expensive. It's rigid in its methods and validation. And it can reinforce toxic economic models.

My dad went to a good state university with credits costing $10~ a pop. The median is now $600 in the U.S. for public universities. Private colleges are more than $1500+ per credit. Not to mention the extremely expensive costs associated with attending.

Ultimately, I believe that people like you, Lenny, and many others will force colleges and universities to reckon with this absurdity.

The internet and alternative educational paths create so many more opportunities for entrepreneurs and independently-minded people.
