A full-time salary at Outseta is $210,000 for everyone—and everyone can earn equity on the same terms as our founders

Hi all!

We decided to standardize the pay for everyone at our SaaS start-up (www.outseta.com)—a full-time salary is $210,000 and everyone is also given the option of working for equity on the same terms as our founders.

There's a bunch of reasons we did this:

  1. We have a fundamental belief that a small team of 20 excellent people can outperform a company of 3x-4x the size.

  2. It gives members of our team a ton of flexibility to work on terms that work for them.

  3. It gives us a predefined structure to hiring people into the company is a part-time, but long term working arrangements.

  4. It eliminates any issues regarding pay inequality.

  5. It encourages actual ownership and gives our team the ability to accrue ownership at a rate that they'd never have at most tech companies.

We have a long way to go to continue proving this model out, but the response has been overwhelmingly positive so far. This is absolutely aspirational and will present challenges of it's own, but I think it also solves a myriad of issues and will encourage a lot of good habits as we continue to scale.

Here's the scoop!

This is really great! I'm a big fan of experimenting with compensation and company structure.

My long term goals have always been to be able to hire people who have no background in tech and who may come from difficult backgrounds but have a strong work ethic, double their salary (or more than double - for some it could be a very significant increase) and then train them while they initially start working in a part of the company that fits their abilities (something like half their time would be training and half would be normal work). Eventually, they would be underpaid in my company and they would be encouraged to land other jobs that compensate them even more.

I'm in a lower cost of living area so I hadn't thought about raising salaries as high as you are doing. I really like the approach you are taking and will definitely be following to see how it goes!

Awesome! Likewise I am super motivated by giving uncommon opportunities to others and finding talent in abnormal places. Thanks for following along!
