A fun, easy pitch exercise

So here is what I did today: an exercise with fellow founders to improve on our pitches. The secret is in not sharing/ knowing the process beforehand. So if you're curious to try it yourself, then maybe it's better to stop reading here, ping me below and if we have about 10 people we can set something up.

For Rate My Meeting I moved from:

Pitch 1. Rate My Meeting saves you time and money wasted on meetings. Online or offline. Have more effective meetings, reduce meeting frustrations.

Pitch 2. Rate My Meeting. Make meetings suck less. Bring the proven power of 5-star ratings to work. Build your company's feedback culture.

Pitch 3. Rate My Meeting. We make meetings suck less. Join managers from Philips, Netflix and Cargill already using Rate My Meeting.

Curious to try run it yourself? Read on.

This is what we did:

  1. Introduce yourselves, person and business. Thirty seconds max, tightly timed.
  2. Once all done, you ask person 2 to tell what person 1's business does.
Now this is why you do not want to know the process
  3. You continue, 3 tells about 2, 4 about 3 and the last person about 1.
What we found today is that basically no one knew to remember anything
  4. Now you provide little bits of feedback, maybe ask for a bit of follow-up "I heard you say X, could you explain that?". Try to tailor it. Filter out buzz words (AI, ML, blockchain), ask numbers, ask about emotions, ask for comparisons.
  5. Ask everyone to decide to invest "virtual" money (say 100k) into any of the start-ups, max 3. Or any amount into real estate. So 20k in A, 40k in B and 60k in real estate (which resembles a fixed return).
  6. Have everyone pitch again, 30 seconds max. Timed.
  7. Repeat 4 and 5 (feedback + invest)
  8. Pitch again
  9. Repeat 5 (invest)
  10. See the results of the invested money in the three rounds. Evaluate, why did certain trends happen? What did you learn?
