I don't know if this content has been spun, written by someone who doesn't speak English natively, or just written poorly.

Instagram lives on hashtags. The reason is they rely more on images and videos instead of long captions. Therefore, hashtags help direct the material to popular themes.

On Instagram, the sweet spot is having just one hashtag. To get better engagement than a single hashtag, you should consider adding 15 or more. While you can use up to 30 descriptions, Instagram could consider a post with this many hashtags as spam.

    What?

Anyhow it's not sourced and there's a bunch of conjecture and hand-waving about how they came to their conclusions. The cheat sheet is useful, but I am doubtful about its effectiveness.

      Hi Meredith -

If you click the link in that paragraph you will see the source!

It is from a report by Hubspot which analyzed over 100 million Instagram posts. It is pretty clear that the sweet spot is 1 hashtag for instagram. Slide 30 in that report has a great chart showing engagement decline with more than 1 hashtag.

"At the same time, having eight or more hashtags reduced a post’s engagement rate by half as much compared to having no hashtags at all. The engagement rate was reduced by over 70% compared to the optimal number of hashtags: one.">

Hope that helps you in your Instagram journey.

We also cleaned up the language to make it easier to read. Thanks for the feedback.
