Hello there Indie Hackers!
I'm participating in the Product Hunt hackathon and my product is feedbeaver, a platform that helps you connect with your audience using Facebook Messenger.
I've put up a small landing page, hosted on Netlify.
I'm a full-time backend developer and I struggle with design, so I'm looking for some feedback!
Landing page: https://www.feedbeaver.com/
Any little tip is appreciated, thanks!
This is the landing page cheat sheet (originally from https://devmarketing.xyz/landing-page-cheat-sheet/):
The first question anyone asks when they hit a site is: "is this for me?"
This is why it's sometimes better to start with a really specific niche. For example: "Feedbeaver helps fashion bloggers promote their content on FB so that they get more consistent traffic."
Your landing page doesn't currently describe the struggle. What pain is your target audience experiencing?
You really need to dig into the pain. Why are they so frustrated? How do they wish their life was different?
I'm a big fan of "show don't tell," and you have a big opportunity here to show how your product could work (especially for "Collect Facebook Messenger subscribers with a 1-click widget").
If you don't have the MVP built yet, create a video that shows how the product will work and how it makes the user's life better.
A landing page should also tell visitors why they should trust you! Good ways to do this:
You've done a good job with the CTA, in that there's clearly one action you want visitors to take: "Get early access."
You might want to test different button copy, for example: "Be the first to try it"
Hey Justin! Been a long time follower and listener of your podcast, and recently attended your talk at Laracon! I've also finished reading Marketing for Developers a couple days ago :)
As an engineer I think I have a natural tendency to focus on the solution more so than the problem/struggle. I need to take some time to come up with better copy.
I'm thinking along the lines of "Increase your open rates by X% and traffic to your website X%", which focus more on the problem (low email open rates)?
I think I can whip up a MVP of the actual widget during the weekend and I'll update the landing page accordingly. I can use the widget itself in my own landing page. Dog fooding 101!
I love Kevin Hale's questions for landing pages: https://twostartupsandababy.wordpress.com/2015/10/14/recap-of-kevin-hales-interface-design-for-startups/
So, I'll go through and answer them for your page:
It's a facebook messenger bot. I understand what it does, but I don't understand why it helps me, or what it replaces. Does it replace an email mailing list with a facebook messenger bot? If so, I think it should state that benefit and the problem it solves, rather than how it solves the problem.
I think so, because we have a blog. However, I don't know how hard it is to install, and I'd expect a demo of some kind.
The design isn't very distinct. The "request early access" is kind of a red flag, and a bigger red flag is that there is no login button - which makes me think that it doesn't even work yet. Also, I would expect a really clear demo of their own product on their landing page - e.g. "Try our product by joining our mailing list" - I would do that just to see how it works. Also, for a Facebook product, it seems weird to me that the footer has links to your Twitter and Product Hunt pages, but not a Facebook page.
There's no pricing info, so I don't know.
I don't know, but I guess some people on Wordpress and Medium? Some links to blogs with the code, or some testimonials would be awesome.
There's a contact email in the footer, but I would expect some more help docs or a messenger embedded to make it easier.
Thank you for linking that resource, I'll go over it and your answers for sure!
It doesn't necessarily replace your email list, but it can complement it. I think of feedbeaver like a "FB Messenger list". Instead of collecting emails you collect "messenger users" (I'd love to have a better term for this). Instead of a newsletter you send a message that will popup in your list's messenger sent by your own chatbot.
As for the other answers, you're absolutely right! I'd love to get some testimonials, help docs and even just a demo would help people understand the product better. However, as this is part of the PH hackathon I'm just now getting a prototype started.
I will definitely bookmark your answer and read it again when I have something done.
For the time being, I will also be adding a use case under the first section based on your feedback.
Thank you!
Cool. I think my main feedback then would be to focus on better explaining the problem this solves (rather than the method it uses to solve the problem). e.g. - Higher open-rates and engagement on newsletters by using Messenger instead of Email
Not necessarily direct feedback on the landing page but looking through the comments you have so far and my familiarity with who this is aimed at, I'd definitely try to explain to content/blog owners how this is essentially Email Marketing 2.0.
I recently gave a chatbot talk which was pretty broad (slides here https://bit.ly/ashevillebots) and in my research it became apparent that the savvy marketers were taking advantage of some unique aspects of FB Messenger bots (by chatting with one you're essentially opting in without having filled out a lead form).
This interview was super interesting and you can skip to the part where they discuss the better conversion of FB ads that brought people to the bot vs the website like normal.

Also, what Drift (https://www.drift.com/) is doing regarding their messaging around chatbots vs lead forms will probably be relevant.
Anyway, bunch of info, I have an interest in the space. Happy to connect outside of this thread if you want to discuss. I've been thinking myself about a product/service that could help people jump into this new channel to reach users. I think it has some challenges regarding how best to explain it and the value.
The idea was originally building a bot that would send me updates for my favorite websites and creating a tool for others to do the same, so more of a B2C product.
The more I thought about it the more I realized it made sense to pivot in a B2B direction because this use case of chat bots delivers a tremendous amount of value if you compare it to email, especially for certain age groups.
I'd love to connect outside the thread. Unfortunately as of now I'm still in a early stage, but I'm hoping to have something working by early next week.
My email is hello@ruigomes.me, feel free to email me. Otherwise you can subscribe to the early list and I'll get in touch through it. Thanks!
Just a few thoughts:
What is your differentiator to other bot creation Tools? Why is it better? Do you target a specific customer segment? If yes you should show it visually and spell it out.
I am missing a few screenshots how its going to work - what I can expect...
For sure, I've just answered philipithomas which mentioned the same.
We target blog owners, providing them with a widget they can install on their website to collect leads, in the form of Facebook messenger users.
The blog owners can then easily syndicate their content to their Messenger list automatically, say every time they have a new post, or manually, like a newsletter works for email.
I definitely do need to make this much more clear than it is right now, so thank you for your feedback!
Looks great so far! Clean and simple.
Here is some feedback:
Thanks Kazzual!
I whipped up this prototype during lunch time so I could start promoting it to friends/family.
Definitely think that a comparison with email would paint a great picture about feedbeaver. I'll spend some time this evening looking for reliable sources to quote and I'll surely add a line like that!
I just clicked your link, and I received an error: This site can’t provide a secure connection.
Hmm, that's weird! Can you try accessing www.feedbeaver.com? I haven't setup SSL for the non-www version, so that might be the issue here.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Since this is an MVP (for now I assume) I don't think it makes sense to go super specific on the landing page, just create a good foundation for now and focus on growing the rest of the project a bit more.
I could say to add testimonials, press coverage or remove the early access part to make a better landing page but it's not the right time for that kind of feedback just yet.
Here are the quick changes that I think would have the most impact.
1- I think you could explain a lot better and more efficiently if you use a more complete version of the GIF you have on the How it works section and put it on the top below the headline (and make the text justify center) Right now it's to tiny and you can't fully see how it works, that way you are not showing the result out of context (only displaying what it looks like an ordinary bot on an iPhone X)
2-You don't specify on the "Get started for free" thing is going to work except at the end of the page, make sure you do that for most CTA's throughout the page
3-Have the "Send to messenger" CTA again below the Pricing
4- Change the bg of the Pricing to a neutral color and make one CTA less significant than the other (maybe one green and the other grey) otherwise you can't control where people's eyes go.
5- Explain the four benefits on the top properly in this kind of structure (example bellow) so people get educated on how much it could impact their business (as you don't have more social proof yet )
Something similar to this would be ideal in your case:

Good luck man!
PS: Also from Porto 👊
The landing page I posted here 2 months ago was a quick sketch, this is actually a much different version, but thanks for the feedback!
I'm working on a couple new features and I'll definitely add a few new sections explaining how and why this is different from other chatbot platforms.
Thanks!
