A marketing playbook for indie hackers

👋 Hey, Indie Hackers!

I spent the last 10 years of my career helping high-growth startups like Loom and Mailgun grow.

But I grew tired of the corporate life and all the b/s that comes with it.

So I quit my job in May to go all-in on myself and build a business that could financially sustain my family.

But it's a little different than what most of y'all build here.

It has three revenue streams:

  1. A marketing consulting company where I help Seed to Series C B2B SaaS companies grow faster

  2. An affiliate marketing business on my website

  3. Digital products where I take my knowledge from #1 and turn it into something anyone can use.

And #3 is exactly what I'm launching today.

It's called the Competitive Conquesting Playbook and it's all about leveraging your competitor’s strengths against them.

By tapping into existing demand for their products, like people searching Google for their alternatives, competitors, and reviews, you’re able to find prospective customers that are ready to buy.

In my consulting business I help companies from Seed to Series C start and scale their growth marketing efforts and it's given me a ton of experience.

It's like a laboratory where I get to test different ideas to see how they work across different industries and company sizes.

And today I'm packaging up one of my best playbooks, one that works across every company size I work with, into a super easy to follow framework.

It works in two parts:

  1. Long term: Build compelling landing pages that can rank well in Google’s organic search results

  2. Short term: Spin up Google Ads campaigns to get traffic today.

    Good luck getting out there on your own! It must evoke a lot of emotions and I applaud you for it.

    I, like a lot of others here, am quite awful at marketing. I am trying the more guerrilla type marketing but have so much to learn overall.

    One question: don't you think nowadays, for new projects Google ads is a little expensive?

    This is awesome! IndieHackers often think coding the application is going to be the hard part. However, in reality, the most challenging aspect for an IndieHacker is marketing to acquire users and encourage them to try the application.

    I collaborated with @Nicklafferty to execute this marketing playbook back in March 2023. Since following his advice, I have seen an increase of over 50% in organic traffic to T.LY. The organic traffic has allowed me to more than double my trial users, which has led to 10% month-over-month growth, and ultimately allowed me to go full-time on T.LY!
