I built a native browser extension to sync video playback across platforms. Screen sharing on Discord compresses video to death, and Syncplay requires local downloads. Rtube syncs the actual web players directly via WebSockets. It also perfectly supports third-party sites 🏴☠️.
Under the hood:
Infrastructure: Node.js WebSocket backend behind a secure proxy. Implemented strict connection throttling, automated process memory management, and proper IP forwarding for robust rate-limiting.
Client Architecture: Fully compliant with Manifest V3. Implemented a hybrid Keep-Alive strategy to stop Service Worker suspension. Squashed a major dynamic DOM memory leak on SPA sites (like YouTube) by ensuring proper garbage collection of event listeners.
It’s completely free and available for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox (with an official Opera release dropping very soon). Would love to hear your thoughts on the architecture.
