A New Channel to Celebrate Indie Hackers and Revenue-Generating Products!

TL;DR

I want to start a YouTube channel sharing stories of Indie Hackers. Not a podcast (@csallen is killing it there and I'm not willing to show my face and my broken English to the world), but something like 10-to-20 min stories covering successful products launched by Indie Hackers. I would want to connect with these individuals, interview them, create original content and build the program from that. I added a poll to validate the concept, feel free to share your thoughts (I'd really appreciate that).

Now onto the blob of text I started writing...

Context

Hi everyone. I'm Eugenio and I'm stoked to share my first post in this community. I discovered this place very recently and I feel like I struck gold from the beginning.

I've been developing software for 3.5 years now and just recently I finished my CS degree, which I did part-time and took me 6 years to finish. During this (long) time I've been wanting to focus on my own projects and - though I didn't know the term before - be an Indie Hacker. And now that the time has come, it's time to start experimenting and working on my ideas.

Now, this whole year I've been having two projects in mind, of which there's one I want to talk about in this post (the other one is a product idea I intend to talk about in the near future if I don't get too busy with what I'll describe below).

The idea

So, considering how the world is changing and the creator economy is in surge, the impact of having an audience (helping launch products or services, getting feedback and connecting with people), and how content consumption patterns are changing, I thought about starting a YouTube Channel and creating content about a topic of my interest.

The only problem then was finding that topic. I initially thought about a channel related to the automotive industry (I always liked Top Gear) or investments, but I figured that didn't motivate me enough. But then, after months of having dismissed the idea, it hit me: why not share stories of indie hackers? I love the content on this place and other sources (e.g: reddit), and I'd consume an audiovisual form of it whenever I couldn't read.

So what I'd like to do is to create a program where each episode we'd tell the story of a product that has reached success in some way (revenue being the most evident, but there are other things that could be considered success). I like the concept of a whiteboard or some animations with a narrator sharing the story, with perhaps images and screen captures of the products being talked about. That is to say, I don't want a podcast or an interviewing channel.

For that I need to connect with Indie Hackers willing to share their story and interview them so that I can build the script, and what a better place to start looking than this?

What's in it for me?

  • If this is successful, I could monetize the channel through YouTube's partner program and other means.
  • I could build an audience on other platforms and social media, through which I could potentially promote products (other's or my own).
  • I'd get to connect with Indie Hackers and possibly extend my network.
  • I could build an audience to my own public profile in case this project fails, I'd still gain something valuable in this age.
  • Try something new and learn new skills.

And what's in it for you?

  • As a consumer, you'd get the type of content you like on a different platform and form.
  • As a builder, you could participate and promote your own products and success stories to the channel's audience.

So that's it. Maybe this is a bad idea, so I thought it'd be better to ask for feedback first and see the response. I'm leaving a poll here to gauge opinion, I'd love to see what you think.

Thanks for reading through.

Best,

Do you think this idea is ...
  1. Good?
  2. Bad?
  3. An unnecessary copy of something else?
