A Phoenix HVAC company came to us last year, stuck in a frustrating spot: every SEO audit they'd paid for came back clean, but they couldn't crack the local pack for their most valuable terms. Three years in business, multiple agencies, still ranking around #8 for "AC repair Phoenix."
We'd seen this pattern enough times to know the audits weren't wrong; they were just looking at the wrong layer.
(Numbers below are representative of a typical campaign, not a single guaranteed outcome; every market is different.)
What the diagnostic found
We ran our ResolveMap entity-coherence diagnostic before touching anything. Three issues surfaced that no checklist audit had caught:
Category drift. They'd switched their GBP primary category 18 months earlier, but the old category was still embedded across dozens of directory citations. Google was getting two different answers about what this business actually was.
NAP inconsistency in the long tail. Their name, address, and phone were consistent on the big citations (Yelp, BBB, Google) but inconsistent across ~30 smaller HVAC and contractor directories. Enough noise to weaken entity confidence.
Low behavioral signal. Even when they did appear in results, their click-through rate was below the threshold Google's local algorithm rewards. They looked unproven, like a business people scrolled past.
What we did
Fixed the foundational issues first: reconciled the category across citations, cleaned up the long-tail NAP inconsistencies. Then ran a GBP CTR campaign on our Advanced tier — real U.S. 5G mobile devices generating genuine search-and-click behavior for their priority terms, not bot traffic.
The sequence matters. CTR signals don't hold if the entity foundation underneath them is incoherent. Diagnose first, then drive behavior.
The 90-day result
The honest caveat
I want to be straight about attribution: we did two things at once (foundation fixes + CTR), so we can't perfectly isolate which drove what. Seasonality plays a role in HVAC, too. Summer is peak AC season in Phoenix. The results are real and verifiable in their own Google Business Profile insights, but anyone claiming a single clean cause-and-effect in local SEO is overselling.
What we're confident about: the business spent three years stuck because every audit told them they were fine. The thing that moved the needle was diagnosing the layer that the checklists skipped.
If you're stuck despite "clean" audits, the diagnostic is where I'd start, not another checklist. Curious whether others have seen this checklist-vs-reality gap in their own local SEO work.
