A question for the YouTubers here.

What are the biggest obstacles you face when trying to run and grow your YouTube channel?

Consider everything; video ideas, making marketing, generating revenue etc.

I have been travel vlogging with my Fiancé for a few months, and we have run across many challenges. Most of them we are still working on...

The main issue we are focusing on is creating and telling a specific story per video. The other obstacle, which isn't a problem for us now as we are traveling full time, is the amount of time it takes to make a video. The last edit took almost 7 hours and we are trying to produce quality content every couple days.

As far as marketing we are just trying to spread our presence on other social media platforms. Generating revenue and marketing will be two areas we focus more on in the future as we narrow down our goals.

On the point about creating and telling a specific story, is the challenge more around extracting and organizing a series of related events from a huge pile of events, and writing down those related events such that they guide you in telling a compelling story?

In other words, am I correct in understanding that the problem is more on the writing front?

This may be what you mean by writing - but its on the preparation side of things. Let's say, for example, we have a full travel day. Well, how can we plan out the videos we shoot that day and frame our discussions in the video to have an interesting story that people want to see. It's very easy to just shoot footage, but without preparation you are stuck with questions in post: what is the purpose and why would people want to watch these videos?

Writing, or storyboarding, your video beforehand would help with this and it's what we are starting to be very intentional with.

Now depending on what type of Youtube videos you want to make, it may be straightforward to create the story but for vlogging it's one of our challenges. I hope that clears it up!
