A timeline for coders and their projects. 📆

Hey IH, 👋

I've had this idea for a small open-source project for a while now:

A better way to keep a timeline of your coding projects, milestones, and memories!

Why?

Well, it all started a couple weeks ago. I was cleaning up my PC and was going through an endless amount of folders and coding projects from years ago.

I thought to myself, "Wow, I got a lot of projects just sitting here on my laptop. Some of them are ugly... but they all truly show how much progress I've made over the past few years as a Frontend developer."

And then...

Boom! gif

Idea alert! 💡

Keep a timeline of your coding projects, milestones, and memories!

Before I delve any further into this project, I would appreciate it if you could leave me some honest feedback in the comments below about this small OSS idea.

Thanks! 🤗

A better way to revisit painful memories... All your failed projects on one page with AI generated comments like: What were you thinking? No way! Unplug me!

It's not clear to me exactly what you mean by this timeline. I could keep a history of my work in a text file. What would this tool do that is either more valuable or easier than that?

I see what you mean. The point of this timeline tool is that it would look more presentable to your peers.

I see that a text editor or notion are great replacements for this tool.

Thanks for sharing your feedback. This is all very helpful.

Cool. If the advantage is that it is better looking, then you may get better feedback if you create a mockup of what one would look like.

Thanks, that would help. I’ll work on that. 👍

I second what someone here said about extracting your learnings from those projects, I have a github project that holds reflections / learnings for every product and general stuff this could be a cool way to present that.

Can also see this as some sort of embed for your personal website/blog/portfolio you name it.

      Nice.

I was thinking the same thing! Thanks for your feedback.

    Hey Brayden,

I think this is an interesting idea. I currently use Google Docs to write a diary for my project. I don't write there daily at all, but when I need to.

I know that there are projects out there that somehow try to help with logging progress publicly like makerlog, wip.chat or even Indie Hackers. I think it may be difficult to compete with these. In any case, good luck with your project!

I might play devil's advocate here. If I have a project that is reasonably complete, I'll either launch it on my personal site or push it to GitHub at a minimum. So, I have the option of easily making it public or private. I'm not sure what I'd gain just having a timeline of various projects. I know that I'm improving, I'm not sure I'd put in the time to document it for others to see....

I see. Thanks for your feedback. This is very helpful.

Feels like you could already use tools such as, Notion, to achieve this without much problem.

    1. 1

Hmm, I see. Thanks for letting me know of that.

What's the difference with this and project management apps or even GitHub or gitlab?

    1. 1

Yeah, so what I am proposing here isn’t for project management. I am thinking of mailing a tool where devs can create a timeline that shows the progress they’ve made as a developer. It will include their projects, languages learned, and memories.

With this, they can embed it on their portfolio or personal website and can share the link with their employer, friends, and colleagues.

I see...kinda like a workout app or those mindfulness apps, except it's tracking developer stuff.

I can see people linking that on their LinkedIn or twitter.

        1. 1

Yeah, that’s what I was envisioning too. We’ll see where this takes me.

      Hey, thanks for dropping by.

      1. Developers who aim to be more organized and want to show off their work.
      2. Because they want to reflect on their past projects, and want to show off their progress to others.
      3. Yes, this is just a small side project that I will be open-sourcing with a friend on Github.
