Building a Business Card Scanner App – Looking for Feedback

Hi Indie Hackers 👋
I'm currently building a mobile app called:
Business Card Scanner (scan cards, extract contacts, save to phone).
The goal is to make networking easier by quickly converting physical business cards into digital contacts.
Main features of the app:
• Scan a business card using the camera
• Extract contact information (name, phone, email, company)
• Save the information directly to the phone contacts
• Scan QR codes printed on business cards
• Crop business cards and save them to the gallery
Here is a quick demo video of the app:

Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mybizzcard.app

I'm still improving the app and would really appreciate feedback from the community.
Questions for you:
Do you still collect business cards at events or meetings?
Would you use an app like this?
What feature would make it more useful?

Business events, meetings, exhibitions, and conferences can generate a huge number of business cards — and managing them manually is slow, messy, and easy to lose track of.

I built MyBizzCard — an AI business card scanner and smart contact manager designed to turn physical cards into organized digital contacts in seconds.

    With MyBizzCard, you can:

    • Scan business cards with AI-powered text recognition

    • Scan multiple business cards in batch mode

    • Send batch emails to selected contacts

    • Save selected batch cards to your phonebook

    • Export selected contacts or batches to CSV or Excel

    • Filter contacts by language code, job title, company name, and more

    • Add reminders for saved contacts to your phone calendar

    • Export contacts as VCF files

    • Scan QR code business cards

    • Create contacts manually when needed

MyBizzCard is now available in 11 app languages:

Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Turkish, English, German, Russian, Japanese, Indonesian, and Portuguese.

The scan flow looks solid. One thing worth thinking about: the real drop-off for most people isn't the scanning — it's what happens after. You scan a stack of cards after an event, save the contacts, and then those people just sit in your phone with zero context about where you met them or what you discussed.

The highest-value upgrade would be tying the contact to the follow-up email thread. Even a simple note field at scan time ("met at SaaStr, she's looking for HR tools") would dramatically increase the chance someone actually uses the contact later. People forget context fast — the card is just a proxy for the relationship, and the relationship lives in the conversation that follows.

For the B2B/sales crowd, that email context layer might also be where CRM integration makes most sense: not just pushing a contact to HubSpot, but pushing the contact + first email + notes as a new deal.

Quick update — I’ve now added some of the features you mentioned to MyBizzCard.

You were right that the value starts after scanning, not just during capture. The app now supports custom tags and follow-up reminders, so saved contacts can carry more context and be easier to act on later.

Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback — it genuinely helped shape the product.

    2. 1

      That’s a great observation. T

We’re planning to add features like quick notes, meeting context, and follow-up reminders so each scanned contact keeps the story behind it.

      Thanks for sharing this perspective.

cool idea but this space already has some established players (CamCard, Microsoft Lens, etc). the question is what makes yours diffrent enough that someone would switch.

have you validated that people are actually frustrated with existing solutions? checking app store reviews for competitors would tell you fast whether theres a real gap or if the market is already well served.

the OCR/AI extraction is table stakes at this point - the real value would be in what happens after the scan. CRM integrations, follow-up reminders, that kind of thing

    1. 1

What we’re focusing on with MyBizzCard is being fully optimized for business cards, not just general OCR.

For example, the app can scan cards written in local languages (including local digits and alphabets), translate them into English, and automatically populate the contact profile with both the original and translated information. Users can choose whether to save the contact in English or in the original language, while keeping the other version stored in the notes for reference.

We also automatically crop and enhance the captured card image and present it neatly in a card-style layout, and the app can read business card QR codes and parse the contact details directly.

Many tools like you mentioned in your question are more general-purpose OCR scanners, while we're trying to build something focused specifically on business networking workflows after the scan.

and we're planning to add features like quick notes, meeting context, follow-up reminders, and CRM integrations so scanned contacts don’t just sit in the phonebook.

  4. 1

Nice concept. One thing that might increase the value for founders is adding context to the contact.

After networking events people usually forget where they met someone. If the app allowed a quick note like “met at SaaS conference – interested in API integrations”, the contact becomes much more useful.

Also curious: are you planning integrations with CRMs like HubSpot or Notion?

Thanks for the suggestion — we completely agree that the real value is the context behind the contact.

We’re actually planning features that let users add quick notes like where they met the person and what they discussed, so the contact isn’t just a name in the phonebook but a useful relationship record.

CRM integrations are also on our roadmap along with follow-up reminders so contacts can turn into real opportunities after events.

Appreciate the feedback — ideas like this help shape the product.

The batch scanning idea from seanchaneydev is spot on. After any event you come home with a stack, not one card. One thing to think about for retention: what if the app let you add a note about where you met the person and what you talked about? Cards are just contact data, but the real value is the context. "Met at TechCrunch Disrupt, interested in API integrations" turns a dead card into an actionable lead.

Great point. After events people rarely have just one card — it’s usually a stack.

Batch scanning is something we’re actively exploring so users can quickly process multiple cards without repeating the whole scan flow every time. We also agree that the real value is the context, so we’re planning features like quick notes (e.g., where you met the person and what you discussed), follow-up reminders, and CRM integrations to turn scanned cards into actionable contacts.

Appreciate the suggestion — feedback like this helps us prioritize what to build next.

  6. 1

Nice idea. Curious — is the card data processed locally on the device or stored in the cloud? Also, do you support exporting contacts to CRMs like HubSpot or Salesforce?

    1. 2

      Good question.

The card data is processed locally on the device. The app uses local OCR and AI to extract the card information and place it into a profile creator screen where the user can review or edit the details before saving.

From there, users can save the contact directly to their phonebook or export it as a VCF file.

At the moment we don't store contacts in the cloud, but we’re planning to add optional features like notes, follow-up reminders, and CRM integrations in future versions.

      Appreciate the question!

I still get business cards at church and networking events and always just shove them in my pocket and forget about them. The camera scan to contacts flow makes sense. Have you thought about letting people scan a batch of cards at once? Like after an event you come home with 10 cards and don't want to scan them one by one.

That’s exactly the situation we had in mind when building the app — people usually come home from events with a stack of cards, not just one.

Right now the flow focuses on quickly scanning and saving individual cards, but batch scanning is something we’ll add it to the new features soon so users could process multiple cards more efficiently after events.

Appreciate the suggestion — that’s a great real-world use case.

  8. 1

Cool concept. Camera-based apps are tricky to get right because users expect instant, accurate results and the reality of OCR on varied card designs is... humbling. I built FaunaDex (AI animal identification from photos) and the amount of edge cases with lighting, angles, and unexpected inputs was wild.

A couple thoughts on making it stickier: the scan-and-save flow is useful but it's basically a one-time interaction per card. Could you add something like a searchable contact history or tagging system so people actually open the app again? Retention is the real challenge with utility apps like this.

Also, are you planning an iOS version? That's where a lot of the networking/conference crowd lives.

Thanks! You're absolutely right — camera-based OCR can be tricky because of lighting, angles, and the huge variety of card layouts.

One thing that has helped us a lot is that MyBizzCard automatically detects and captures the card, then crops it and shows the cleaned card image to the user before the contact parsing starts. This step helps reduce errors and gives users a chance to confirm the card is captured correctly.

You also made a great point about retention. We're planning features like searchable contact history, tagging, notes about where you met someone, follow-up reminders, and CRM integrations so the app becomes useful beyond just the initial scan.

And yes — an iOS version is definitely on the roadmap.

      Really appreciate the thoughtful feedback!

Cool idea, I still get business cards at networking events and always lose them. One thing I'd add is automatic follow-up reminders, like nudging you to email the person a few days after meeting them

    1. 1

      great suggestion
i'll add this to the feature list
      thanks for the idea
have you installed the app and scanned a card?
      please send me your feedback

  10. 1

Nice idea — networking events still generate a surprising number of physical cards.
I’ve seen similar tools before, but accuracy and quick export to contacts usually make the biggest difference.

Out of curiosity, how well does the scanning work with cards that have unusual layouts or multiple languages?

    1. 1

Thanks! Accuracy was one of the main things I focused on. The app combines local parsing with AI-based extraction, which helps handle different layouts and multiple languages. It works well with most standard cards, though very unusual designs can still be tricky. I’m continuously improving it using real-world card examples.

      1. 1

That makes sense. Mixing local parsing with AI extraction sounds like a solid approach. Real-world card designs can be pretty chaotic sometimes 😅 but it’s cool that you’re improving it with real examples.

        1. 1

The approach has actually been working quite well so far. When the layout gets messy the AI extraction helps clean things up.

Testing with real-world cards has improved the accuracy quite a bit.

If you’re curious to try it or have some tricky cards to test, I’d really appreciate feedback:
