About

I spent the last 4 years building BengaStation, a fully functional music streaming app — basically a Spotify/Apple Music-style experience

What it does:

  • Audio streaming with Redis caching

  • Real-time listening sessions (listen together)

  • Playlists, favorites, queue with shuffle/repeat

  • Lyrics, comments, search

  • Full auth via Supabase

  • Native iOS app (Capacitor) with persistent background audio

  • Fully automated CI/CD for iOS builds via GitHub Actions (no local Xcode needed)

  • Sideloaded distribution (no App Store yet)

Stack: Next.js frontend, Express backend on a Hetzner VPS, Supabase (auth + DB), Redis, deployed for $8/month total infra cost.

The honest part: audio is sourced via yt-dlp from YouTube — no music licensing in place. This means it's not something that can scale publicly as-is;

i dont use a navbar as u can see, instead i chose to use a floating buton that expands into the a menu to show the navigation links

    The part that stood out to me was the honesty about where the product is today.

    It's interesting how sometimes the hardest problems aren't technical anymore. You can build something that works incredibly well, but whether it can exist as a business becomes a completely different question.
