After learning about, and soon after obsessing over, the exciting world of digital nomadism and all the travel and remote-working freedom that can come with it (seriously, I can't watch another episode of House Hunters International...), I found that there's an extremely large population of people who are interested in uprooting from their current lives, moving abroad to a get a fresh start on things, live their best life, all while immersing themselves in the wonderful cultures they find themselves in. The reality is - this move can be DAUNTING - and micro-communities on the web have sprouted to provide a space to ask niche questions about a particular country, or things to consider before taking the plunge. This is an endless list, by the way: Entry requirements (think Visa/Sponsorship), Finding Employment, Spoken Language, Banking, Public Transportation, Paying Taxes, Tipping Culture, Cancelling Memberships, etc.
We came up with and recently purchased a .com for Abroad Start. The name is a play on words between starting a life abroad, and the broad range of things you have to consider before you go and after you arrive. My initial thought is to have a long-form guide supported by country or region-specific variations (free), and setup a private, subscription-based Slack community for long-form conversations + instant chat with like-minded individuals.
Any thoughts or suggestions before I begin work on the site? I've considered also setting up a free Discourse Forum, but not sure if it would detract or cheapen the Slack community. Would love to hear from you.
