Accept PayPal payment?

I'm curious how many other SaaS founders accept payment with PayPal as well as Stripe (or other payment provider).

We've had requests from agencies and YouTubers using PriceWell to support PayPal. They use PayPal to make it easier for their clients/customers to pay but I've not seen many SaaS products using it.

The big advantage of accepting PayPal payments would be that customers often have everything set up on PayPal already (especially if you are B2C).

The downside however is you've got to manage payments/plans customer details in another platform (something we're looking to address with PriceWell).

Do you accept PayPal for your SaaS?

We're based in the US and this year we switched from Paypal to stripe however Paypal was working great for our use case plus we'll still be using it to pay out the creators for our models.

Maybe base it off of what you're seeing like "If we get X many requests then we'll integrate with Paypal"

I do know creators/influencers in the US love Paypal (hired 300-400 creators over the last few years) because it's easy and less techy to set up a business then start invoicing/selling.

The way how common and widely spread PayPal is must be the only benefit it has over Stripe. In general the latter is much more convenient for users as well as developer-friendly. The country support list is better for PayPal, but Stripe works just fine in both the US and Europe. The checkout is so much better and everything. Learn more about the differences between these payment providers.

So as a development agency we usually turn to Stripe in our SaaS products. But when working with products outside of the US, we sometimes use different ones, like MangoPay for Europe or RazorTree for clients in India.

Few main reasons why I also accept PayPal:

    1. Customers don't use virtual-credit cards (with PayPal) that often and recurring payment won't fail.
    2. The chance to win a dispute against a credit card company almost doesn't exist when it comes to SaaS. With PayPal the chance is really high to win a dispute case because they know the market.

This is really interesting, thanks. Have you won many disputes with PayPal? I thought they were mostly in the customer's side.

Yes. I was able to provide a proof that the customers got what they paid for.

With credit card disputes it never happened and I end up paying additional ~$20 per dispute

Yes, I've seen lots on Twitter about disputes handled through Stripe and they never win!

You shouldn't use Paypal, customers can at any time ask for a chargeback

    1. 1

The same with credit card. The customer can contact their bank at any time and say they don't recognise the charge

Yup, true. But, with paypal it is as simple as clicking on a button.

        1. 1

True, this and the fees are probably why not many SaaS accept PayPal

Paypal will hold the money, use stripe or an other payment gateway.

PayPal is pretty popular in Germany, I always use it when it's offered. I'm not using it as a customer of many SaaS/software products but it is very common to have PayPal as a checkout option in e-commerce shops in Germany

PayPal is risky because of chargeback. Most of time PayPal takes decision on the side of buyer even if they are wrong and once your account gets chargeback then your PayPal account becomes unstable.

Paypal transaction charges really are high at least when you convert USD to other local currency.

Yes, their transaction fees are higher than anywhere else. That's the killer.
