Acquiring early adopters via "Show HN: What are you working on?"

AssetRoom is a free service I created after I found myself regularly reading about interesting stocks, but failing to then keep up with them over time - often reading many months/years later about how successful they went on to be (or not!).

After finding success with Reddit DMs, I decided to try posting on Hacker News' monthly "Show HN: What are you working on?" thread - a recurring monthly discussion where developers share their current projects with the HN community.

I crafted a simple, straightforward pitch for my regulatory filing summary platform that:

  1. Clearly explained the problem "I often read about interesting public companies (from an investment perspective or otherwise), but fail to then keep up with them over time (sometimes reading many months/years later how successful they were - or not!)"

  2. Described my solution (AI-generated summaries of SEC filings for stocks you follow)

  3. Added a link

No fancy marketing tactics - just an honest description of what I built and why I built it, in an extremely concise comment.

I was genuinely surprised by the results from a simple comment on a monthly thread:

  • 121 visits in just 24 hours

  • 13 sign-ups (10.7% conversion rate)

Interestingly, this conversion rate is closely correlated with my landing page conversion rate from reddit DM's.

Why I Think It Worked

  1. HN is full of people who appreciate tools that save time and solve real problems

  2. My pitch focused on the specific pain point my product addresses

  3. I made sure the path from interest to sign-up was straightforward

I'll be posting on next months thread for sure - almost no effort for potentially a decent number of new eyeballs on my landing page.
