Acquisition Channel Opportunities: Twitter Ads, Reddit, FB News, OnlyFans

Do you want to make Twitter Ads work for you? Have you thought about running ads on Reddit but didn't know it's if it's worth it? Is OnlyFans just a joke or a viable acquisition channel? Have you heard about Facebook News (a competitor to Google News) and the potential it has to bring you new traffic?

These are the topics I'll explore in this acquisition channel opportunities report below.

1. Twitter Just Made it Easier to Run Profitable Ads

Twitter just made frequency caps possible for its platform. A "frequency cap" controls the number of times your ad is shown to a specific user. For example, you could now configure Twitter to show your ad only once to 1000 users. You couldn't do that previously.

What this means for you: Potentially lower costs for running Twitter ads. If you've tried Twitter ads in the past and found them to be expensive, re-consider running again.

2. Reddit Wants You to Run Your Ads There (By Revealing the Number of Daily Users: 52 Million)

This is the first official statistic to ever come directly from Reddit. They weren't hiding the reason for revealing this number:

“We’re focused on daily usership and increasing this number as we continue to grow our community and scale our advertising business.”

Their ad revenue has also increased (which means more and more advertisers are having success there):

The company’s ad revenue totaled more than $100 million in 2019 and is on track to rise by more than 70% this year

What this means for you: Keep an eye on Reddit Ads. These guys just announced they're getting more advertiser-friendly, which means they should probably release new advertiser-friendly features in the near future.

Before getting to 3): If you like what you're seeing so far, and want to get a report like this each week via email, hit the red "subscribe" button you see above.

3. Facebook is Expanding "FB News", Giving News Providers a New, Major Traffic Source

Facebook announced it will expand its dedicated "News" tab to the UK in January:

As you can see, this is a pretty visible tab (located next to the home page). This gives news publishers another traffic channel for their articles.

What this means for you: If part of what you do is providing news, then take a look at what Facebook asks for in order to be added to this tab (look for the paragraphs starting with the sentence "How do we identify these publishers?").

BONUS: OnlyFans is Growing Faster than Gumroad, Substack, Patreon and Twitch. What Are the Lessons We Can Learn Here?

Peter Yang published this analysis with a pretty interesting graph. He also published another interesting stat showing that many OnlyFans creators make the most money from paid messages (and not actual subscription)

What this means for you: We may be getting to a point where people are more likely to pay for one-to-one interaction, rather than by yet-another-guy/gal who 'subscribed' to something.

The Twitter news is huge. I've been literally begging them for this lol

It's crazy for a platform like Twitter not to have a basic feature like this. Feel free to report on your results here :)

    That's really interesting, thank you!!

Great summary. Have to take a look at twitter ads.

This whole thread about OnlyFans marketing was enlightening to me, despite how I feel about the platform. Worth a read for sure.

I think (with OnlyFans) there are a lot of sensitive topics to touch (and not sure whether any growth marketing influencer on Twitter has the balls to do it) on the real dynamics behind the growth. Topics like:

      a) What's the average OnlyFans user like?
      b) What's their ethnicity?
      c) What's their social life?

Answers which may open some extremely sensitive topics and start a big flame war.

Thanks for that Sam Parr link Brendan, wasn't aware of it :)

First time I hear of “onlyfans”. That makes this an awesome post in my eyes Darko. Keep them coming!

      I hope you're kidding

The OF insight is really interesting. The mindset shift of customers from 1to1 vs "I just subscribed" takes the personalization to a whole other level.

    Thanks for sharing, @zerotousers

Agreed, pretty surprising. Glad you liked the post, Tom.

"Keep an eye on Reddit Ads." - Definitely! It's a promising platform for SaaS PPC efforts.

I've seen people saying Reddit Ads are useless because most people there are nerds/geeks. Though recently, some IHers/founders reported some recent results with Reddit.

    Interesting finds

Love the post! The OnlyFans stat was pretty interesting. I also signed up to one guy's Patreon to get access/ask him direct questions via direct messages. I'm wondering if they have similar stats.

    1. 1

Most of Patreon's data seems to be quantitative, not qualitative: https://mediakix.com/blog/top-patron-statistics-marketers-need-to-know/

I see. Then I guess someone will need to reach out to creators & ask them directly.

    2. 1

I'll try to see if Patreon has similar stats. Maybe it's a monetization opportunity they're over-looking (by upselling based on direct access to the creator and his wisdom).

      1. 1

They must have done some sort of market research, asking people questions like "What's the primary reason you subscribed to this plan Y, rather than plan X?"

        Thanks!
