Admitting My Blindspots. What are some of yours?

IndieHackers, like most social media, is full of wins and congratulations. In most cases, this is a good thing! We should all be proud of ours and others' wins, and I personally think the stigma around reasonably verbalizing pride in one's accomplishments should be removed.

That being said, I believe in the power of verbalizing one's shortcomings too, especially in the context of verbalizing your plan to improve.

What are some of your blind spots, shortcomings and weak points as developers, founders and hackers?

For me, I'm taking the time to learn d e s i g n and trying to fix my lack of experience in front end development. I understand React, my primary front-end preference, from a technical level pretty well, but holy hell my design and beautification skills are just about nonexistent. I've never been super artistic, and the intuitive skills in design and beautification have always been weak points in my journey.

I also have just about zero experience in marketing. I've built up a good Twitter following, so when I launched my course on web scraping with Python last year, I relied entirely on organic social media marketing and built up a lifetime revenue of ~$1,600 and counting. That's not bad at all, but I know if I had put some more effort into marketing materials, promos, videos and ad placements, I could do better.

So, in all of my sprint planning, I set aside some time to learn about all aspects of marketing and design. Today I watched a couple hours of content on Figma and translating Figma designs to HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Last week I took a couple hours to learn how to run ads on Google's adsense platform. I also need to learn how to do video production better, both for marketing material for Malparse and for my YouTube channel.

There's just so much to learn, and none of it is the sexy back-end coding that I love so much! 😅
