Advice needed on how to find a UI/UX designer
Hello fellow indie hackers. First time posting here.
I am a software engineer located in Toronto, Canada in midst of developing a product for the web. I have been struggling with this for a while now to find a decent UI/UX designer to work with for a decent rate. I have good frontend and backend development skills but I not a designer. Actually designing UI hurts my head.
My criteria are simple:
1.) I am not looking for a partner or a product manager/owner
2.) I don't care about location of the designer
3.) I don't want designer that wants to contribute code.
I have tried upwork. I dipped my toe in by contracting out a logo design and I was not impressed with the experience and end result. I spent hours combing through profiles of potential candidates and I was not impressed.
I have tried reaching out to my network on LinkedIn and potential candidates their want to charge me full rate they would charge a big client.
This has led me to here where I see my peers doing impressive work. I am hoping I can get some advice here. Thank you in advance.
You can look for design styles you like on dribbble, and then try contacting the designer for freelance work.
Also, top designers are also active on twitter. You can probably find them and connect with them, if you're willing to pay accordingly.
@tbotnar thanks for the response. I do get feeds from dribble. Twitter is a tool I am yet to leverage. I will try Twitter.

Also look for local designer UI/UX groups on fb. I once hired a UX guy on upwork, super expensive and I wont recommend, freelancer.com and fiver are cheap but quality is bad. I still couldn't find a decent UX guy for my work, so I started reading some of the basics of UX.
Thanks for the advice. My time is extremely limited so I would rather offload the design work to someone who does that daily, but ux is a space that I feel is very opinionated and as a creator this is an area I need to dive into to at least have some foundation in. Thanks
What is your budget?

What type of rate are you hoping to find?
I am not particularly into rates. For instance rate could be low but hours could be extremely high. I would prefer to have a conversation with the potential designer and come to a mutual agreement. Thanks for your response
I'm not sure I asked my question appropriately, apologies. I've done a ton of work with designers in the past, and expect to pay at least $90 an hour for quality work. I haven't worked with designers who adjust their rate based on number of hours. Based on my experience, you'll be starting with a set hourly rate and the total cost is going to be dependent on size of the job. Good luck, I hope you find what you're looking for!
