Advice on an idea that involves printing an image to canvas and shipping it to the customer

Hey hackers.

Recently I've been toying with an idea that (in the final stage) requires printing an image to canvas and shipping it to the customer.

Since I'm primarily a software developer, I have no experience with logistics to start this kind of project. I'm looking for advice on:

  • how to outsource something like printing to canvas
  • and how to ship it to the end customer

Preferably in a way that could be (semi-) automated. I would be truly grateful for any advice and tips on how to start.

Haven't used them for canvas print but have for T-Shirts, but you could try Printful: https://www.printful.com/custom/wall-art/canvas-prints

Shipping gets very complicated internationally (and expensive), so you may want to start with one or two specific countries you ship too.

Update: Just wanted to add there are a lot of the print-on-demand companies. I would definitely order from each one and check the quality to find one you're happy with.

Thanks for the suggestion! You're right, I'll have to limit shipping at the start :/

Cheers @rosiesherry . Unfortunately my co-founder took care of all the logistical side. I can't really remember who we used. But it's definitely very possible.

I'd say the important thing is never touching the canvas yourself. You outsource it to another company, provide them with an address. And you never actually see / touch the canvas yourself.

I'd advise calling a few canvas companies and explaining your a business expecting this volume of sales and asking whether you could have a point person to handle your account + also a discount. And also if you have your own packaging they might be able to do that as well.

Thanks, that is great advice. If you have some time, I'd love to hear more about the type of business you are running and how you manage it.

    Try
    Fine Art America
    Canvas on Demand
    Pixels

There are several different print-on-demands companies that do this. The markup is pretty steep though.

Yeah, the price is also something that worries me. Could you send me a couple of the companies so I can check them out?

One of the biggest problems with physical products here in Australia is the cost of postage/shipping. Not sure if that’s a factor for you or not.

Maybe @harrydry knows a thing or two, maybe not, but I can't think of canvases without thinking of him now.
