Advice on going door to door

Hi IH, I’m increasingly realising that for my product to succeed, I’m going to need to go door to door to get my first 100+ customers. The thing is, I have no real idea where to begin with the conversation.

Has anyone got any tips or good resources for effective door to door sales?

How should I open the conversation for example? How do I effectively get them to make an online purchase while I’m there?

We’re an online farmers market, enabling consumers to buy direct from small farmers. We don’t have a subscription model that people can sign up to so they’d have to choose exactly what they want to buy in front of me - a more challenging process than simply signing up but we think the long term benefits of the flexibility are important to the business.

Thanks for your help

Considering what you've told me about your business, door-to-door is just 1 (albeit not so efficient) way to reach consumers. There are also different variations for offline marketing, like:

    a) Leaving flyers
    b) Billboards
    etc.

Yikes good luck going door-to-door, is there a reason why you feel you need to do that?

I think you'd be better off finding local events that you can go to. For example, a local farmers market would seem like a good place to start, your customer is there walking around and it's going to be much easier to ask for a minute of their time. Any sort of real-life market is going to be an easier place to sell I'd imagine.

This type of thing would also work quite well on socials I'd imagine, you'd need to look into it. If a technical stack is holding you back there are lots of no-code solutions to get you up and running

I tried getting a stand at a market - it’s hard to get one at a farmers market as I’m not a farmer and they typically want that. I got one at a small food market but it was dead.

Sure there are better ways to go about it than door to door at scale, but for now I’m finding I really need to hold people’s hand to get them to buy.

I tried Facebook, Instagram and google ads but didn’t get a single sale. Likewise with posting on online groups that may be interested.
