04 Comment on at least one fellow hacker's progress and give them an IH Point for their check in.

Optional:

05 Share your Work In Progress to underscore your accomplishments.

06 (And an @AndrewV recommendation!) Need specific help/feedback, add a request!

Then tune in the tomorrow to share how you did on your own tasks!

    EPIC

    By end of 2019:

Get 100 paying customers. 0/100 so far

    By end of February:

Publically release of Brooklet to IOS and Android app stores.

Get 15 Beta testers. 4/15 so far

    YESTERDAY

Work on the privacy policy. I was reading through the pre-made one I had originally used and it doesn't line up at all with what I want from Brooklet.

    TODAY

    Finish Privacy Policy

    KUDOS
To the anonymous Indiehacker who spent a whole day discussing privacy matters with me over email.

    WIP - Brooklet

    1. 1

Any chance you discovered whether JWTs are exempt?

        1. 1

From the reading I've done so far, you need to indicate what data you're collecting and for what reason. I think you also need to indicate how data is transferred securely. JWT is the mechanism for transmission so you might say something like "User data is transferred securely to the server via JSON Web Tokens".

          I'm no lawyer.

      1. 1

        Exempt from what? :)

    2. 1

Let us know what you come up with for the privacy policy, if it's custom or off the shelf.

I was considering https://getterms.io for future projects.

      1. 1

I took a look at that but decided to research it a bit more.
I'm trying to conform to CalOPPA and GDPR. I have a contact who has just executed the whole GDPR thing, I'll talk to him and report back with my findings.

    EPIC

    By end of 2019:

    100 Users for ScheduledMemo.com: 3/100

10 Paying Customer for AutomatedApi: launch pending

    By End of February:

Refactor some Scheduled Memo code into more reusable parts so I can shift it into Automated Api pipeline.

Get Automated API up and running with a limited Alpha group.

    YESTERDAY

✓ posted a formalish announcement on IH, which I felt good about

✓ Review of Automated API is underway, I'm back in the code and ready to roll

FAILED: most everything else, I needed a break. I did however resolve myself to focusing on Automated API since it is far more likely to be a revenue generator quickly than WallabyVault would be.

    TODAY

    • Launch Scheduled Memo on Product Hunt
    • Complete Review of broad tasks for AutomatedApi and start breaking down subtasks for next sprint.
    • Provision VM host and start staging Automated API artifacts for testing.
    • I really want to start putting together some content marketing type stuff for my projects soon...so I'll either plan for that or jam something out. Good or bad I expect I can use it as a base to build on.

KUDOS: @samlevy for launching your personal site, I like that as a first step. Something simple and public and a good spot to iterate from.

    WORK IN PROGRESS: AutomatedApi.com

    1. 1

@jpusateri you have a typo in the second paragraph https://automatedapi.com/Home/About

      1. 1

thanks, I'll have that updated today :)

  5. 4

DAMN IT! I just discovered that my dick pic detection (a.k.a face recognition) is too damn picky. Which is likely why last weeks new campaign was substantively less successful than expected. Ugh. When I think of all those first chapters I missed out on!

Also, "doing shit that doesn't scale" is a time suck. In the evenings, I haven't time to do anything but "doing shit that doesn't scale". The investment is paying off as the ratio of chicks posting is improving, but damn. The effort takes all my after work hours. This weekend, I really need focus on automating.

Having written the above, I'll concede that I've learned a great deal (like my dick pic detection is too keen) keeping the first weeks in manual mode.

    EPIC
    By end of 2019:

100 paying customers. 4 earned to date.

    By end of January:

    • 💥💥💥100 first chapters published. 114 published to date. 💥💥💥
    • 50 qualitative chapters published. (Will provide update after I finish pruning.)

    YESTERDAY

    • ✓ [Growth] Do shit that doesn't scale.
    • ✓ [Retention] Chat with customers.
    • ✓ [Exposure] Pitched two well-known publication in Seattle.
    • ✓ Still thinking about epic for February.

    TODAY

    • Disengage dick pic detection until I find another solution.
    • [Growth] Do shit that doesn't scale.

KUDOS: @jpusateri for launching his website! Looking good!

    WORK IN PROGRESS: Happy Endings

    1. 2

And congrats on another epic completed!

      1. 1

Thank you! Trying to savor it. But can't help to note the mountain I've yet to scale...

    2. 2

What shit that doesn't scale are you doing to bring on more females?

      1. 1

I'm manually contacting chicks on competitor sites and asking them to republish their work. Questionable tactics, for sure. And perhaps even more questionable once I automate the process.

What's your take? I'm alternately racked with guilt and "by-any-means-necessary".

        1. 2

I'd say that's definitely right on the line of questionable and startup hustle. If I were you, I'd stop and try to find a better, more sustainable way.

          1. 1

(Smiling) Well it is sustainable. What do you find questionable? And curious whether you find AirBnB's start up tactic, scraping Craig's List, equally questionable?

            1. 1

Not sustainable in a couple senses...

              1. Like you said, it'd be near impossible to automate.
              2. Your competitors would probs boot you off their platform if they found out you're snagging their users/content.

If I imagine that the competing platform would boot you off if aware of your tactics, then that to me is a sign of a questionable tactic that is better left untapped (my personal opinion).

I see your point with AirBnB, it's definitely a gray area. I'm not sure I have anything besides an "icky" vibe telling me it's questionable.

              1. 1

Pushing back. Just a touch. (Smiling) Being defensive has nothing to do about it.

                1. Did I say it was impossible to automate? That's not correct. And in fact, with the life line offered by @AndrewV, I may be automated sooner rather than later.

                2. Maybe. Both are... vintage.

And just to be clear. I'm not snagging content. (Which in my mind is a no-go without user permission.) I'm asking users if they'd be interested in publishing a first chapter on Happy Endings.

For me, it hasn't hit the icky point such that creating fake users has. (Although many a great community was started with that particular tactic.) But it solidly in the questionable arena. (And super effective.)

                1. 1

Having disagreements and back-and-forths is what this is all about 👍🏼.

And you're right, I misread what "questionable" meant for automation, my bad.

    FEBRUARY EPIC

    • DepChecker - Gather feedback from my colleagues using the MVP, get the MVP in front of more people, and do some research/brainstorming to determine whether this is a product worth pursuing.
    • Movie Medium - This is a fun thing I've been doing that's getting more promising, so gonna try to be more formal with my approach.

    YESTERDAY

    • Nothing, besides working on an unrelated coding blog post

    TODAY

    • Working on a tech blog post
    • Learned about my colleagues grand plan for improving his team management /workflow, a small piece of which is being solved by DepChecker. Gonna learn more and see what else I can automate.
    • Start writing out the rules for Movie Medium

KUDOS to @helengriffinjr for job hunting AND indiehacking

    WIP

    • Movie Medium isn't ready to share yet...still super small alpha. But it's a game where you predict Rotten Tomatoes Scores with friends and see who's more accurate.
    1. 2

Movie Medium sounds fun! What the "getting more promising" bit?

      1. 1

I made a simple version that I've been playing with a super enthusiastic small group. And every time I mention it to a movie lover, they ask when they can start playing.

So I think it's time to build out a way for anyone to create a group and start playing.

    2. 1

Has it gotten clearer if DepChecker is helping your dev buddies? Or has Movie Medium gain more traction and your attention to work on it instead?

      1. 2

Unfortunately no, I sat down with my dev colleague and learned a bit more about his goals, but he hasn't officially begun using DepChecker yet. Just gonna wait and see on that one.

And I've been just refactoring my chaotic early code for Movie Medium this past week or so, learning more about building larger Node apps etc. as the next version will be some unchartered waters for me in terms of complexity. It's a hit with my buddies and anyone we mention the idea to, so trying to prepare it for public use.

Thanks for checking in! Gotta not be such a lazy ass and get back to the daily standups....

        1. 1

No problem, I got you. Good luck on leveling up on Node. So you got people using Movie Medium even w/ it's chaotic early code? If so, maybe that's where your attention/talents should be applied to. Have you test folks' allergic reaction to monetization for Movie Medium yet?

    EPIC

    • Alpha release on February 15th

    YESTERDAY

    • Rewrote some parts of the front end framework, now it has mega fine grained control over animations
    • Implemented the forgot password component animation (one more thing missing)
    • A demo of animations on the old client authentication vs the new client authentication here https://youtu.be/lzv1griaBRs

    TODAY

    • Started migrating features from the old client
    • Finished the forgot password animation - it came out pretty transformers-ish, but it's my favorite I did so far

    By the end of February

    • Get Vimalin for Fusion at the same level as Vimalin for Windows

    Marketing

    • Have paid users for Vimalin for Windows. Releasing the windows port was the epic for January, getting paid users is next on the list.

    YESTERDAY:

    • Vimalin for Fusion, continue with my changed code evaluation for the macOS port.

    TODAY:

    • Vimalin for Fusion, ongoing changed code review for the macOS port. It is getting tiresome, but turns out I wrote tons of code over 4 months and I must verify the changes to make sure I am not breaking earlier code. Today I actually did find some small bugs and have fixed those already.
      Code review for the win.

    KUDOS
Kudos: @jpusateri for releasing ScheduledMemo.com and having another project in waiting already!

      Sorry for the late reply.

      Thank you!
