After 7 years in marketing, I think it’s a fake profession

I've been building stuff for years now as a non-marketer founder.

Making +$100K MRR.

One thing I thought I could ignore was "marketing".

Tried everything not to do it myself:

❌ Found a marketing Co-founder → didn't know what he was doing
❌ Hired a marketing team → ended up doing key things myself
❌ Hired an agency → broke the bank + needed too much maintenance

Marketing almost became my anxiety to build things. I thought I'd fail because i was missing that "secret sauce".

As a founder, what you think you're missing always feels like the "secret sauce".

That's not true.

The truth is "the magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding".

Long story short, I've started doing marketing with zero knowledge. After 7 years, and making a a notable MRR with my tools, I started to think marketing is "a fake profession."

To confirm my thought, I've asked 10 CMOs two questions:

  1. What is marketing?
  2. What is a marketing move that you'd suggest to founders like me?

GOT NO CONSISTENT AND REAL RESPONSE LOL

Don't get me wrong. This is not to blame anyone as I'm sure there are talents out there. But my point is, 99.999% of marketers do not have the answer to your growth - simply because:

→ Every business is different.
→ Trends are changing, with extreme speed now.
→ Marketing is a testing game - the more you test the better chance to win.
→ No one is effectively using data.

For these and more, AI felt like a better marketer. So I started building Evercopy.

Not just to end my fear, but because that was the only way for me to handle marketing in the future.

Evercopy is an AI marketing ally for non-marketer founders - plans, operates and optimizes marketing operations with AI.

Not built to rebel the marketers but still a good candidate to prove my thesis lolllolol

If you are wondering https://www.evercopy.ai/

Wdyt? Does anyone found a good marketer? Is it a real profession?

Well... As a marketer, I strongly advise separating the wheat from the chaff... There is too much noise around marketing. But calling it a fake profession could be an excess. The reason I made an account on this forum is that I saw a pattern of lack of knowledge in the marketing area, and try to give some tips when someone asks. This post is just a long ad that you've created, with a good narrative around a common problem that solo founders have, plus the promise of a solution with your product... All in all, a good marketing strategy 😉

Same with legal or HR... So much obsolete professions :)

    This is so true.

As a founder, you always miss something. Money, people, ideas, connections. Many of us easily fail in the absence of these but this perception of objectively thinking if something is really a barrier is really insprating.

    Congrats on Evercopy!!!

Alex you're killing it ahahahaha I've been thinking the same for so long. Marketing people are scam ...

This is so empowering because for so long poor marketing was my excuse for not being able to grow my business. Thinking this was is just 💛

Will deff try Evercopy - good luck building!!!
