After quitting my job and streaming 5000 hours on Twitch, Bot Land has finally launched!

Hey everyone,

I've been working full-time on a game called Bot Land for the last four years and it just launched: https://bot.land/

In the game, you fully automate bots either with a Scratch-like interface called Blockly or a subset of JavaScript (or you can ignore that altogether and use the default scripts!). It's free to play and is on iOS, Android, Steam, and itch.io.

Also, I streamed the entire development process live on Twitch, so there are ~5000 hours of VODs available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS5Va996Exg&list=PLSM9PbIe-9hVfX0_wCD64AH7_DVNJDuCb.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Congrats, that's a major achievement and tons of work. How do you plan to make money? Why will you quit job, work for 4 years only to give it away for free?

      Hey, thanks!

How do you plan to make money?

The monetization plan is here: https://share.bot.land/monetization.html

Why will you quit job, work for 4 years only to give it away for free?

The rationale behind making it free-to-play is to reduce the barrier to entry for as many people as possible. My passion has always been around making video games, and while this one is a product (in that there's a monetization plan), the driving force was the game itself.

Very nice, I don't play games so I don't know if folks are already doing such sort of monetization. Are others doing this? I see folks have already downloaded the game, are you getting some purchases? Congrats again on a great effort and shipping! I hope it works out great.

          Are others doing this?

Yes, the free-to-play model is relatively common nowadays, although a lot of developers treat it as a money-grab and try to squeeze as much as they can out of their users.

          are you getting some purchases?

Yes, some. There was an issue on Launch Day (Tuesday) preventing players from verifying their email addresses, which is a prerequisite for making purchases. I'm focusing on stabilizing the game and then hopefully adding more features/content in the next couple of months.

          Thanks for the interest! :D

I know the gaming niche is pretty competitive and cutthroat, what are your plan to survive in this industry?

To be honest, I'm not sure survival is very likely, but we'll see how the next couple of months go. My plan is to increase my marketing efforts and just keep working on the game and listening to user feedback. Thankfully, I've built up a decent audience after all that time on Twitch, so there's always at least a steady trickle of new eyes on the game.
