This is an interesting question, I think answer definitely varies depending on the size/stage of the business. For us (FireKamp), we have been operating for about 5 years, shifted from product focus, to service focused, and now doing a mix of both.
For us, the route to building SaaS products happens hand in hand with the agency business. We get proceeds from our clients, which gets funneled into a product pod for internal product development. Over time, as more of the businesses income stream is generated from internal products, we can shift over and eventually move away from the Agency business as a whole. This kind of transition makes the most sense for our organization, to stage things out over (3 years, starting 2023) for a full transition. We've built an initial product which does around $5k/mo for the past few years (Mimik.app), now focusing on building a few other products like this to help sustain and smoothen the transition a bit.

I love hearing stories like this! I am in the same boat as the author and currently debating starting an agency or a SaaS product. I have a design / marketing background and may take a similar approach: build an agency with a team to support clients, and then pivot to building SaaS products. Very helpful to hear that it can be done!

The simple answer is: why does it matter?
If you can find a way for it to make an MRR without having to invest your personal time then you've made it! ;)
