I was just looking at how crazy fast the dev cycle has become lately. With the whole "vibe coding" trend and AI agents, you can literally prompt your way to a working MVP in a single weekend. It’s magic.
But here’s the irony that’s been driving me crazy:
Our coding process is living in 2026, but our market research process is still stuck in 2010.
Building the thing takes 10x less time, but figuring out if the thing is worth building? Still the same old grind.
Whenever I try to validate an idea, I still find myself:
Opening 50 tabs to search for competitors
Digging through Product Hunt archives to see what failed and why
Creating massive, soul-crushing Excel spreadsheets to compare features and positioning
Guessing if there's actual market demand
It feels like the bottleneck just shifted from "How do I build this?" to "Should I build this? And who exactly am I competing with?"
How are you guys handling this phase? Are you still doing the manual spreadsheet grind for competitor analysis and market validation, or is there some secret workflow/tool I’m missing?

The bottleneck moved from build speed to conviction.
Most people can ship an MVP in a weekend now.
Very few can get to “this is the right problem, for the right buyer, with enough pain to switch” that fast.
That’s why validation still feels slow.
The real drag usually isn’t competitor research.
It’s trying to answer 4 different questions at once:
Is this painful?
Who feels it most?
What are they using now?
Why hasn’t someone solved it well already?
The faster path is usually:
pick one narrow buyer,
find what they already tolerate,
then look for where they’re still stitching workarounds together.
That usually tells you more than 50 tabs ever will.

If the problem were truly critical, users would have likely churned by now. The fact that they stay with existing products suggests they might be tolerating small frustrations due to high switching costs or a simple preference for the status quo.

That’s usually the real signal.
If users are still tolerating the workaround, the problem is not:
“does this exist?”
It’s:
“is the pain bad enough to justify switching?”
That is usually the filter worth testing first.
Not whether the workflow is better.
Whether the pain is expensive enough to break inertia.
That hits right at the core of the issue. 'Breaking the inertia' is exactly the phrase I was looking for. We focused so much on making the market research workflow better that we might have skipped testing if the manual spreadsheet grind was painful enough for users to actually switch.
Since you mentioned this is the filter worth testing first, I’d love to ask: How do you personally go about testing this? How do you figure out if the discomfort is severe enough to justify the switch?
I’d test one thing first:
not “is this better?”
but “what makes switching worth the hassle?”
That usually means asking users four blunt questions:
what are you doing today instead
what does that cost you
what is annoying but tolerated
what would have to break before you’d actually switch
That last one is usually the real signal.
If the answer is vague, the pain is not expensive enough.
If the answer is immediate and specific, the pain is real.
That usually tells you faster than feature feedback.
