One of the most important questions often overlooked is that we're outsourcing our cognitive training ground to AI.
We're all using AI to move faster, whether it's generating boilerplate, debugging, or even writing entire features. And it works. But what happens when we stop exercising the cognitive muscles that made us good at this in the first place?
Just like physical fitness, cognitive fitness benefits from diverse challenges, not just repetition in one domain.
We don't need AI to help us play chess, that would take all the fun away. We thrive on pattern recognition and strategic thinking. The same goes for writing long-form content, that's when we achieve clarity of thought. When listening to music, what appeals to us is the rhythm and coordination. Even when we play logic games or solve puzzles, it's the abstract reasoning that excites us.
And for most of us coders, it's the challenge, the thinking, and the logic behind every project.
Here's what concerns me most: if the next generation of developers only learns to prompt, they'll never develop the deep practice that builds intuition.
If we outsource all the "easy" problems to AI, we're removing the training ground where intuition is built.
AI tools are here to stay and can be truly valuable if used correctly and intentionally. The key is being strategic about what we delegate and what we preserve—maintaining the core cognitive strengths that make us valuable as thinkers, not just prompt engineers.
