Alexa, what food is expiring soon?

Core Problems

Throwing food away sucks.
Solutions tend to rely on tedious data entry, which also sucks.

Solution

Remind me at the right time that something is expiring.
Make it super easy to enter my data.
Only track food items you care about not wasting.

Product

  • Alexa skills to hands-free add, remove, and query food
  • An app to easily (optimised for minimum effort) manage the items
  • Push notifications to remind you at the right time e.g. whenever you meal plan

Inspiration

I initially thought of this when I used to commute. On my way home, I would think about what I was going to make for dinner, and have no idea what I have in my fridge...let alone what was expiring.

Future Features

Multiple users / household
If not everyone wants to manage the inventory, the OCD one in the house can do the "managing" and then everyone gets the benefit of the expiration heads up.

Food Owners
Make it easy to "request" eating someone else's food by sending a yes/no push notification to their phone: Dan is requesting your last chicken breast expiring tomorrow. Approve/Deny?

Broadcast to your flat you have leftovers that are free for anyone to have. e.g. I'm going out of town, please someone eat this

Would love some thoughts!

I think this is sound really great to reduce food waste but I think that some people might worry about taking other people food in term of the contamination issue. I think this system will work really well for a large grocery store and you invent this to reduce food waste or donate to another shelter or re-sell to the small local shop for a cheaper price
