Alternatives to Medium for content marketing?

I'm looking to setup a company blog - Are there any alternative platforms to Medium that don't have paywalls that restrict the number of readers.

Or do I just need to bite the bullet and set up my own self-hosted blog ?

Been dabbling with Stackbit. It creates a static site in minutes. Many templates available too, including pretty blog templates. Am considering shifting my blog over - free hosting on Netlify/Github, post blogs on NetlifyCMS (nocode), add custom domain (no cost).

Stackbit is very interesting, still needs a lot of work for non-technical users.

        depends on use case

I guess it kind of depends on the content.

    For example there is https://svbtle.com/

Their editor interface is minimalistic, and they have a "Forever promise": https://svbtle.com/promise

Or if your content is going to be more development related then there is: https://dev.to/

Or you can check out some other medium alternatives here with their pros and cons: https://medium-alternatives.com/

Hi, I'm completely new to marketing stuff. If we use Wordpress.com for content marketing, is there any constraint on technical aspects of SEO? It seems that even for paid plans, first two tiers have lots of limitation, such as no SEO tools pre-installed, not allowed to install plugin or upload theme. Thanks.

Give a try to wordpress, you'll not regret it.
You can buy a custom hosting plan and create your blog in minutes from Cpanel.
It all depends of how many you want to spend.

I have seen 100s of people regret using WP.

They find it slow, it has a lot security issues and plugin hell.

Normally you have to hire a designer to create the website and then a developer to make sure it is fast.

Just microblog and post to your Instagram Stories. It's a way to stay consistent on one of the most popular platforms while keeping your content relevant to your industry.

You can self-host ghost for $5-10/month on a Digital Ocean droplet. It's worked well for me: https://marketplace.digitalocean.com/apps/ghost

I'd also recommend having a look at Webflow. Their plans which include CMS is around $15/month. Their built in editor for writing content isn't as nice as something like Medium or Ghost though

If you don't want to manage the technicalities, you could opt for "managed blog hosting". Both Ghost CMS and Wordpress have managed options.

    Ghost Pro starts at 29USD/mo.
    WPEngine starts at 35USD/mo.

You'll probably want a non-default theme, try themeforest.net for that.

The best solutions I have seen are Wordpress (not great) or static site generator also not great.

Wordpress is better if you plan on growing and hiring a marketing team.

If you host the static site on Netlify etc it is free but you have to use Git etc to upload content or pay $30+ for headless CMS.

Several headless CMSes have generous free tiers. Small and medium static sites can generally be 100% free to operate. Managing it can be a little 'techy', I must admit.
