Am I on the Indieweb yet?

I don't understand what webmentions have to do with the IndieWeb - the point of the IndieWeb is so you can own your content and identity (apparently: https://indieweb.org/why) - but how does merely stating where your content has been mentioned online help you do that?
I'm with you - I'm not sure how it does. But if you're an Indie Hacker who's working on selling a product online, featuring webmentions on your product's site is a good way to boost your credibility/legitimacy I guess. Is anyone here religious about this and could shed some light?
The indieweb, as I understand it, is a way to use a "network" of decentralized personal sites in lieu of data-hungry social media companies. Personal sites act as a profile. Articles acts as posts. Web mentions act like connection between sites and the posting/commenting on each other's walls. I get notified if one of the "posts" on your "profile" mentions my "profile", and that mention can even display on my "profile" if I want it to.
You could say that they are what make it a network.
So web mentions are an integral and necessary part of the indieweb. Without them, the indieweb wouldn't be a sufficient replacement.
That's not to say that it is a sufficient replacement now — there's a long way to go.

i think it's really a good idea
If you haven't already thought about joining the indieweb, it's definitely worth looking into. Here'a a really great place to start.
I think it's a really good idea, but it's a huge task. If someone did integrate all of those features into one, I don't doubt it would be popular. I also think the plugins option is good, but for UX purposes, having a browser in which users can find everything integrated might be best.
