Am not sure if this is allowed... Thinking of making something like tailwindUI with TailwindCSS

So as the title says, I'm thinking of making a paid components library like tailwindUI , using tailwindCSS.
I've read the license : https://tailwindui.com/license
and basically they prohibit selling anything made with tailwindUI that compete with tailwindUI....which I wont be doing, I will be using tailwindCSS.

I'll make sure that my component don't look too much like TailwindUI.
The issue is some tailwindUI components are so simple looking, I'm worried about getting accused of copying them.
If tailwindUI provides a simple blue button, does it mean that I can't have a blue button in my components library ?
Also, some card layout, hero layouts are so ubiquitous it would be weird if they prohibit someone from making something like it and sell it.

What do you think ?

    You should be fine.

The thing I would worry about is distribution.

How will you market the templates?

With no following, it would be challenging...but that applies to many products.
It might be extra challenging because selling code particularly requires more trust and authority on the matter.
I'm not aiming at making 0.5M in 3 days though.

Yeah, this is sort of the catch with them being the actual authors of the the library and then creating that product. When they announced it and then when they shared the numbers after launch, I was surprised/not surprised. They already have enormous visibility (well-earned) so launching a product almost guarantees them instant success (and heavy money bags).

The thought I had during this time was: anyone could have done that at any time. The tool was there (tailwindcss), it was just a matter of composing the components.

I think throwing your hat in the ring is helpful. They definitely have a distinct style. Offering a new perspective would be great! I say go for it.

One efficient way to increase brand awareness, if you're just starting out, is to give few components for free and collect emails.

I think it is just fine.
You are using an opensource framework, you are not copying their components.
Go for it! Would like to see a tailwindui alternative

I'm a tailwind user and also purchased the tailwindUI package. they aren't selling elements like buttons, but rather responsive sections of pages (orchestration of many elements for a use case). This is a much larger macro implementation of designs. You should be able to visually differentiate on this so that it doesn't look similar. Provided you do this, I do think you'd be OK. The key is to differentiate the designs and approach for how you sell them IMO.

    Ask Tailwind folks directly maybe?

Also, there is https://tailwind.build/ out there. Maybe worth reaching out to its author. He may have some info on the matter.

Hi, I'm the author of Tailwind Builder :) As I understand OP, he/she wants to create a paid UI library using Tailwind CSS.

Tailwind CSS has been released under MIT license ( https://github.com/tailwindcss/tailwindcss/blob/master/LICENSE ), which allows such [commercial] projects.

Tailwind UI is a different thing. It's a separate & commerce project, and you can't use it to build your own paid UI library. Same applies to my Tailwind Builder ( https://tailwind.build/licenses )

If you want to create a UI library using Tailwind CSS, you should check its license, not all projects that use it. :)

Hi Dawid! I like the idea of Tailwind Builder. I was looking for something to build a full UI a few days ago, ended up creating my own (non Tailwind), because of the pricing.

If I can suggest – it would be cool if I could build the whole project without registration/paying, and if I ended up with something good, then get it for a fixed price something like $5 for every page.

Hi Elans. Not sustainable for me, to be honest. That pricing says, "pay whenever you want, and till then, you can use the tool for free." It's possible for VC funded companies, where scale is more important than profits, but not for bootstrapped like mine:)

          1. 2

What meant with that – would be great that I could build but couldn't export project before I pay, but can use full features of it to learn / explore the tool. I have to pay before I understand if it is useful for me or not. But that's only my opinion. Have a nice day!

            1. 1

In that case, what's stopping you from just copying the html from devtools instead of paying to export?

    2. 1

      Yes, thanks for the pointer.

It is like to sell a tailwindcss dashboard template ?
