[AMA] How to make Product of the Day #1 on Product Hunt!

We launched our product (Typed) on Product Hunt yesterday, and fortunately we achieved Product of the Day #1 with over 1000 upvotes!
It definitely took multiple trial & error, and we would be more than happy to share our experiences with you. Please feel free to ask!
Very cool! Congratulations! Your product looks great! Looks like you had a lot of comments on your post. Did you build a community for this before you launched? Did you pay a hunter? I'd love to know how you generated that initial critical mass that often seems to be important to get the ball rolling.
This time we hunted the product ourselves! For our beta, we launched with a hunter with a 5-figure following and we definitely think it helps. However if you carefully prepare the launch by building a strong audience (making it known to active Product Hunt users), a separate hunter is unnecessary.
As a SaaS product, we definitely had our own heavy users and those in Lifetime Deal communities who were very much willing to build the initial support and hype. Starting off with friends and family is best. Something that’s very important to do is to update the vote status with your customers and supporters on an hourly basis, and making it known to the public on social media platforms. Make sure to promote your launch to those who have a high following on Product Hunt by reaching out to them on twitter or linkedin. We believe not all votes are weighed equally!

Congratulations. When did you start telling your family and friends to support you, considering the fact that you might be banned if too many of them sign to Product Hunt on the day of your launch?
Congratulations! Seems like you launched without a hunter - do you think it’s worth getting a hunter with high following?
Getting a hunter with a high following will help! We did our previous launch (beta) with an external hunter, and it definitely made a lot of initial traction. If you can, you definitely should!

Please don’t try to fill your votes with new signups! Product Hunt’s system will detect this, and may even possibly bring your product down!
