An underrated way to find marketing channels

The hardest part of building a product isn't building it. It's marketing. Those who have tried, know. Those who haven't, will find out.

But before marketing, you need to actually know your distribution channels, i.e where your customer is and how to reach them.

Common distribution channels:

  • Social media accounts (Youtube, Tiktok, Instagram etc etc)
  • Online forums (Hackernews, Reddit, Indiehackers etc etc)
  • Email
  • Blogs
    Etc etc etc...

I've found an underrated way of finding which distribution channels to focus on, by copying your competitors.

How to do it:

  • Head to http://serprobot.com/serp-check
  • Enter your main keywords
  • Check the top 10 ranking sites for each keyword
    This will give you:
  • Bloggers who have written similar content you can reach out to (and get those juicy backlinks)
  • Influencers in your niche you can reach out to for affiliate marketing
  • Social media accounts you can replicate and start posting yourself
  • More

For example, for my site catfishes.co I entered the keyword "ai influencer"

I got results of competitor products, Facebook pages in the niche (I WILL be copying), blog posts on the subject that I could repurpose.
In any case, I think this is a useful way to get the gist of where your audience is hanging out, and what to target.

Oh this is interesting! I was just asked about distribution for my new MVP boilerplates product and saw this! Thanks for sharing, I’ve already found a few things I can start from!

Thanks a million 💯🙏 I just tried the SEO tool you mentioned it's a real 💎 thanks.

I have question though what if my website is brand new? It seems the website is mandatory to see the results. Or your advice would be just put any site even brand new one and get the results and then see my top ranked competitors?

    Thank you again

Hey Younes, it doesn't matter the age of your website. The goal is to see what is ranking. You can even put in a completely different website if you want. What matters is just those keyword rankings from competitors

I see now. Thanks a lot.

I think it's good to understand that tactics change, but principles stand.

Alex Hormozi's books are literally worth the read.
    So is Scientific Advertising.

Hiring consultants could also be super helpful, to get their view on today's tactics!

    What do you think?

We need more folks talking about marketing. Building isn't enough.

    Thanks for sharing this!

How would you recommend marketing towards a consumer product? My app basically creates metrics for anything, in numbers such as time and amount (with custom option).

There aren't a very specific target-group, where the platform may be for anyone who seek life-metrics. BUT, there will be communities to share specific metrics and media, such as fishing, economy, etc. But for now, it's main focus is personal and inner-circle.

I'm no expert but I guess this is what I would do.

I'd narrow down who I'm targeting to start with. "Anyone/Everyone" is too broad. Your marketing efforts won't be concentrated and, even worse, your product won't serve anyone. You need an ideal customer profile to begin with. You can expand niche after.
Ask yourself who would really need something like this. It's harsh, but sometimes the reason why we say "anyone could want it" is because actually no one does.

Truly ask who would want it. Perhaps, people on a self-improvement journey. This already narrows things down. Now, your customer profile would look maybe more like:

      • People into fitness (gym, yoga, martial arts, sport etc...) => Target fitness forums
      • People who read self-help books => Target self-help communities
      • Etc

Marketing for B2C can be easier sometimes actually. If you're creative/good at creating content, you can easily leverage platforms like Youtube Shorts and Tiktok, especially if your product has built in virality.
Start posting on Tiktok, see what works and what doesn't, keep pivoting. All it can take sometime is one viral post for the machine to start turning.

Take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm also just a budding indiehacker. I have a long way to go too.

Thanks for the insight and feedback, will try to convert with this! :D
I totally agree with you, and that's my plan for now. Targeting a specific group, for so to target more relevant groups later. I'm already marketing on TikTok and Instagram actually :D

Thanks for sharing. However I got a 404 page after clicking the link. Do I need to log in to use this tool?

      Hey, I put a wrong link. It's /serp-check, not /serpcheck
      Here's the working link: https://www.serprobot.com/serp-check
