Analysis on when the best time is to post on Reddit
I made a little side-project which gathers usage data subreddits, namely how many people are online and how much is posted.
It shows a graph about the usage over the course of a week, which should make it easier to gauge when the best time for a posting is.

2020 Update:
"According to data scientist Randal Olson, one of the most suitable times to post is 9 am EST (Eastern Standard Time). He suggests that this particular time can produce the highest Reddit traffic by hour on average.
Based on the statistics, a considerable chunk of posts made around 9 am Eastern Standard Time gains more than 100 upvotes. But this is not absolute and varies on the type of content you are publishing on the subreddits. Some subreddits might generally experience more traffic during other times of the day. You have to be aware of this and notice if your content falls under such an uncommon niche. Now, some will argue that 8 am is the best time to post on Reddit with the best day being Monday as it is known to be the best scoring hour. However, combining these two does not mean it is the best time. So, aim to stick with the time of 9 am EST as there should be a great amount of traffic at this time with everyone at their computer in work."

Good start! I'd be interested in seeing more granular types of reports, like what's the easiest day/time to get a post to hang in the top five sorted by hot for any given sub.
I found selling physical products to the USA in a niche subreddit that more important than number of people online and number of new posts was how long I could maintain my post in the top three links early week from 9-2 across US timezones.
Of course there's a huge difference between trying to get something viral in a 7m subscriber sub vs getting individual customers in a 100k subscriber sub.

I also thought about that. It is a bit more complicated. The simple version of it would be to just check how many posts there are in a period of time (which is already shown in the graph), sum those up, and see when it would be out of the frontpage (or the first 3 posts).
That would result in the timespan when the least amount of new posts come in.
A more complicated one would include the average upvotes the posts get, and how many upvotes you expect on your post.
Those are the ways I can think of right now, if you have other ideas, please tell me :)
