Announcing my productized service for startups and founders

Hey everyone, here Ash.

I recently launched my subscription-based design studio for startups and founders called Allie (www.allie.so).

Yeah yeah, I know there is nothing novel about the idea but give me a couple of minutes of your attention to tell you the story of how I came up with it.

I'm a Senior Product Designer, and I have been collaborating closely with founders and product teams for over 10y. During that experience, I identified 2 critical pain points that entrepreneurs face:

  1. Some of them avoid investing in UX/UI design at the beginning of the journey and by the time they need to clean and improve their product to raise more money the process takes a lot of time and is very expensive.
  2. Others invest in design early in the process but hiring a full-time product designer is extremely risky and a waste of valuable time.

During my career, I experienced both scenarios, and let me tell you that is very sad for everyone.

That's where I found in productized services an interesting solution for a real problem that founders are facing.

I have been testing this approach with some clients to test myself and fortunately, the results were very promising.

Now I'm in the process of turning this into a real business and that's how Allie was born.

This week I launched the website and now I'm reaching my network of founders to introduce my company and see if there is a fit between the service I provide and their needs.

I want to document all my milestones and findings in public in the hope of helping someone on a similar path, so stay tuned!

And if anyone reading this has some feedback or advice for what's coming in my journey, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Ash,
Website looks good but can be a bit more polished for mobile experience.

We are going to launch our service "product development subscription".

May be we can partner up?

    Good luck.

      Sounds interesting :)

      Thanks for the feedback!

Design just fits the productization idea perfectly. I've always wondered if it actually financially sustainable in the end? Like, is that recurring revenue stream enough to pay for designers and that small but unavoidable amount of management + admin costs?

It's also important to price your service so you can actually profit from it + choose clients who need ongoing work instead of just one-time work. That way you can sustainably charge more with less management/admin costs.

I think that the challenge for every studio/agency is to have recurring clients. Particularly in this business model, you have to deal with clients that might pause or cancel the service after a certain amount of time of work, whereas in a project-based studio at least you know when a project starts and finishes.

If you can solve that, you can have a great sustainable business.
