Any advice for starting a newsletter to a Medium author?

Hey!

I've been writing on Medium (somewhat successfully) for about 8 months now and am pinching myself for not starting a newsletter/email list earlier. I've hit just over 100,000 views in that time and feel like I'm finally starting to gain some traction.

The issue is, I don't really have a niche, per se. I like to write about a wide variety of subjects--basically whatever interests me the most that day.

I know that niching down is an important first step to starting a newsletter, but I feel I would get bored of doing that after a while.

Last week I just got onto Substack after doing a deep dive into it, and am going to try that for now with my 'general' posts.

Any advice for a newsletter noobie?

Thanks!

    Here is my advice.

Use https://slidetosubscribe.com/ a free tool to add a sign-up form at the end of each medium post. And integrate it with MailerLite.

Then choose a domain name and create a one-page site like indieletters.com and integrate MailerLite with it (Free up to 1000 subscribers, and offers great email templates unlike Mailchimp) and start your newsletter just like me.

One thing I would like to add, why are you just posting on medium instead of your blog?
Man, why are you leaving money on the table? Make a blog, publish your posts there and import them to the medium using their "import your story" tool. In this way, you can monetize your audience in different ways.

Substack looks great. You can also check https://www.getrevue.co/

I used it to create my newsletter and I am very satisfied.

I would say keep posting to Medium but include a link at the end of each post to your "new" home (on Substack). Over time you will build up a number of readers on your new platform, and these people will be higher quality since they directly wanted to learn more about your writing specifically!

Great to see I'm on the right path, I've started doing that in publications that allow a small CTA. Cheers!

The best idea I can share is to pick your niche by picking your values. Let me explain.

Maybe you like to write about design, motorcycles and travel. But it might be that the values you are writing about are about HEALTH.

So you can start a health oriented newsletter.

I am talking about direction multiple of topics into a single or two values that can group most of your articles.

Neat idea, I'll have to think on that one. Thanks!
