Hi Jim. Here I am. Currently I'm working on fitness app. To be honest I don't know if I'll ever release it. I work as an iOS Engineer but I wanted to create a product completely on my own from the ground up. I wanted to learn more about UI/UX, backend development(I already had some experience), frontend development and a few new Apple technologies that I didn't use before. I started working on the project 2 months ago and I already learned a ton of stuff.
Hey man :) Sounds like a great idea to learn through a project that's what I also did in the past. Hands-on programming is always better than books :D
What's holding you back in releasing it?
That's a good question. For me, the best way to solidify my knowledge of new technologies is to use them in a project. I am an iOS developer for almost 6 years now but I spend the last year exploring UI/UX, Backend Development in Go and a little bit of Frontend Development. The reason I did it is because I wanted to learn more about all the steps that are required to create a software product from start to finish. In order to do so, I had to choose a side project. As I am a gym addict, it felt natural to me to work on a fitness app because it's something that I find interesting and the chances are higher for me to finish it.
There are 2 reasons that make me consider If I ever want to release the app though.
That's awesome, the fitness industry IMHO has reached saturation in terms of apps so I totally understand when you say: "I dont want to release just another app".
Here in the US there are some really cool startups working on camera-apps that track your movement to see if you're doing your exercises correctly...I don't see many other apps being used around other than the usual stuff that keep logs of reps/sets or to discover new exercises..
There's a few apps that track the heartrate built inside watchOS but that's a whole different story!
