Hi everyone this is my first post so go easy on me.
The idea I have is a combination of something kind of like LifeRPG (Android) and Habitica (cross-platform).
For those that don't know LifeRPG is an app where you make your life into an RPG (hence the name) where you organize the activities and hobbies you do into skills. And then you create missions that attach those skills and grant you XP when you complete the skills. So basically it is a way to gamify the action of completing tasks.
Habitica is similar but they gear more towards habit tracking and daily tasks rewarding you XP for completing things on a regular basis and losing health when you don't. They also have collaboration so you can set up a party to keep each other accountable for tasks completed, because if you take damage everyone takes damage.
So I liked how LifeRPG was set up with Skills that gain XP based on Missions you complete, but since it was only on my phone it was a real killer for me. And while Habitica was cross-platform it felt weird using it with other people around since it was more RPG-like whereas LifeRPG just looked like a normal todo list.
So what I would want to create is a platform that takes some of the things I like about both of them and combine them into a more discrete, cross-platform gamified todo list and habit tracker. That organizes things into Skills like LifeRPG but gives a nice way to do daily habits without looking like I am playing a weird game at work.
Some of the things I am having a hard time with is thinking about monetization strategies and interest overall. I think there might be some interest for something like this but finding an audience that I would try to market towards is difficult since I don't know who the target demographic would be. And if an audience was procured I don't know how I would monetize it. I was thinking maybe advertising or maybe a paywall but they both don't feel great as an option.
What are your thoughts?
I joined just to comment here. Just want to validate your idea by letting you know there are those who would be interested.
I would absolutely love some sort of a mashup of LifeRPG/DoItNow and Habitica and why I was trolling google for a solution. Here are my reasons for wanting a combination.
This I like about Habitica:
+Cross platform
+Day start time (I work overnights)
+Ability to buy armor/weapons as you level
+Mounts/pets
+Loot drops for task completion
+Some predetermined rewards with the ability to create my own
+Party and community interaction/support. Open world feel with availability of regular events and quests/missions.
Things I like about LifeRPG/DoItNow:
+Customization of abilities and skills
+Statistical Mapping
+Optional habit generation
+Applying a difficulty AND importance percentage
+Calendar view (purchasable feature)
+Not so... cutesy.
I'm having a hard time deciding which to use and may split my tasks/habits between them. I'm just not sure how I would do that yet, thought I'd see if someone already come up with a solution and happened upon your post. Even something more simplified that is missing some of the elements would be more helpful than using both.
As for monetization, you could have a base that's free and has limited functionality but have more features available at an additional cost or with subscription. I think the most, shall we say, 'definable' demographic would be 'students', so you could include a longer trial period and student rates if you do the subscription model.
I have no idea if this will help you in any way or if what you have in mind is what I imagine but thought I'd throw my two cents in. :-) Cheers!
I definitely like the idea. But, like you, I'm having a hard time imagining who would pay for it.
I've decided to create a couple of small products this year and don't think about monetization at all. I'm doing it to learn new stuff (both in development and in marketing), to strengthen my portfolio and most importantly to form a habit of finishing what I've started. If, by some wild chance, one of them becomes popular and server costs rises significantly, then, in my opinion (and in my case) is a time to think how to convert free users to paying users.
Yeah I think that it is a good idea to finish small projects, but I have done that and not thought about the market before and ended up with something that I could not sell because I did not know the target market and how it would be paid for, so instead this time around I'd like to make a small project that I have a target market in mind before starting. Thanks for the reply though.
