Any other bootstrapped tech founders want to connect in a small group of like-minded founders?
Hello IH,
I've always felt out of place joining existing Slack and Discord groups where there are already a large number of existing people in those communities and trying to jump right in onto random general conversations to connect has never really worked for me.
I'm not trying to start up another large scale group or anything like that but I'd genuinely love to be able to connect with maybe a handful of like-minded bootstrapped tech founders who are actively building and wants to connect as well. I do have entrepreneurial friends I connect with but would love to add a few more to that list. Building, especially in a Covid world, is starting to really make me miss connecting with other founders.
Mastermind groups historically, in my experience, hasn't really worked well and I'm not really sure that's what I'm really looking for here but are there any other bootstrapped tech founders here who feels the same way and is interested in connecting, having a small group of people to talk to and bounce ideas off of, etc... in a tight knit group as opposed to joining another large Slack or Discord group.
Thinking of maybe starting a small Slack group for this and inviting a handful of people if there are others here who are similarly interested.
How is what you’re describing different from a mastermind group? Because that’s what it sounds like to me.
I’m curious to know why mastermind groups haven’t worked for you in the past.
I've always felt mastermind groups felt like a book club. Everyone gathers in a group, hopefully have an agenda or when they meet, and try to adhoc discussions. That's not something I'm looking for. I'm really looking for a small group to have free flow discussions whenever, no different than if I was just reaching out to friends. I don't want it feel like a formal setup. Those kind of groups never worked well for me.

i'd love to connect and hear more specifically what you're looking for that isn't a mastermind group like steven mentioned... very neat that you want to do that! i've got a small group of operators / ceos in my community... i couldn't live without them.

This is very interesting to setup. In my view I'll recommend not to grow to big. Those big slack groups are similar than social media. You lose time reading a lot of things and very unproductive at the end.
I'll love to join with a small people and accountability position or you kick them out
That shouldn't be necessary. I'm not looking to connect with everyone. I'm reaching out to individuals and if we connect, I'll add them to the group and if not, no harm no foul. There shouldn't be a need to kick anyone out.

Appreciate that but I don't think that's the right place for me. I'm not looking to share stories publicly and as the post implies, I'm not looking to bring on investors (or advisors; staying bootstrapped).
Seems maybe there might be a possibility to do it internally too from the way you phrased it but what I'm really looking to connect with founders on an authentic personal level.

Some folks on Venturemark are just interested in keeping their venture support network up to date (other founders, nothing public, no impersonal communication).

I guess the rotating groups are for when you have more than a handful of people. So that you can replicate a small group setting in a larger community.

Mainly if you're bootstrapping a tech side-hustle or startup. That's not a hard requirement though it's preferred. I just am not really into content creator type businesses or things like that so trying to look for founders doing similar things.

Sure. I previously bootstrapped and co-founded a tech startup, scaled that to a team of 14 generating $1.5M/mo in revenue, sold the company, scaled the team to 300 before leaving.
Spent time building a bunch of side projects and eventually got back into building another company which focuses on building niche tech services.

This might not be the right fit but I just created a new (free) community using Mighty Networks in order to connect with other entrepreneurs away from social media. Since it's new, everyone in the group is new to each other but it's not specific to tech founders (which might be what you're looking for). I am happy to share the link if you or anyone is interested in checking it out. As far as I know, the entire group is made up of bootstrappers. We also have the ability to add groups within the community and I'd be happy to add a tech founder group if you'd like. Edited: If that's not your thing, I'd be interested in joining.
Have you seeing anything good there at mighty networks? I join a few to try it up and it is a bad facebook.

I think it depends on what you mean by "as bad as Facebook". I am in several MN paid and free. I'd say paid groups are a LOT better than free in general regardless of platform. There are several reasons we went with MN over other platforms including Facebook but the pure separation was a large factor. On Facebook, a user is faced with 100% of their activity on all of Facebook at any given time (notification bell). Whereas when you're in a mighty network you are only faced with the activity within that specific network. Again, there were other features that MN had that I needed anyway, but the algorithm changes to Facebook groups was also a deciding factor.
