Hello IndieHackers,
It's been just over a month since I launched an initial landing page for a new idea I've been working on. It's been very slow for the past few weeks as we recently had our first child, who is now 10 weeks old. Even though the amount of work I'm able to get done has gradually been increasing, it's still difficult to get much done. Combined with working part-time at another startup (who have been very understanding of the situation), it's been a snail's pace with my own startup.
Personal story aside, let me present the idea: On-demand software talent, where startups can build their own private pool of engineers that they can then contract software work to when needed. Startups can review and assess engineers before they go into the pool, and once in the pool, these engineers can be requested for time on-demand. The landing page details the experience of using this method to access software talent.
It's a new approach for startups to have access to software talent, and a way for freelancers and contractors to get work. The original post for the inital page was here: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/any-software-contractors-or-freelancers-looking-for-work-d8e42f163b. Since then, I've done a lot of prototyping of the experience and a lot of this is presented on the landing page. In addition, since that original landing page, both startups interested in creating a pool and freelancers and contractors interested in work can actually sign up. Freelancers and contractors can also setup their profile. This will be the profile that startups review first before going further with the process of adding engineers to their private pool.
For now, I'm looking for any freelancers and contract software engineers who would be interested in working in this way, and would be OK with being added to the private pools of startups. For anyone that has been involved in software recruiting, you'll know that the talent side is usually the tough part - the side of the market that's hard to convince. That's why I'm starting with the talent side, and why it'd help me out immensely if you can setup a profile if this way of working interests you!
It's not my intention to rain on your parade, but there a quite a few of such marketplaces already out there (some of them quite huge):
Toptal - https://www.toptal.com/
Fiverr - https://www.fiverr.com/
FreeUp - https://freeup.net/
Indie Contractors - https://indiecontractors.com/
To be honest they are not great when it comes to high quality work. I imagine you've done your research and found a USP that you could compete with that's not apparent from your post.
Regarding the interest of "working in this way" and "being added to the private pools of startups", it all depends what exactly that means.
I think there's a lot of interest in finding freelance work, especially now that the job market is flooded with talent, but I think you need to be a lot more specific about the details. I hope that helps.
Yes, indeed there are quite a few marketplaces like this - I hadn't seen FreeUp or Indie Contractors from that list. In terms of the market, I am actually hoping to capture some of the market of recruitment agencies that place daily rate or hourly rate contractors. So the intention is to target "high quality work" as you describe it - the recruitment that's still traditionally done offline or on job listings boards, and not freelance marketplaces.
I think in a lot of regional markets, the biggest problem for this kind of recruitment has been that there is more demand than supply of non-Junior engineers. Developers are tied up in jobs that they like so that the hardest part of recruitment is to convince them to switch, or find the right moment that they would be convinced to switch. This is why recruitment agencies are expensive - it's a hard sales job. The idea of "talent pools" is meant to be a unique solution to this - it's to change the mindset from a switch is a rare thing to switching whenever I'm done with a piece of work or a period is the norm, and just another dimension of flexible working.
Even if the market is flooded with talent now (maybe?), I think trying to change the mindset so that flexible working also means being on multiple talent pools for multiple companies and switching regularly would be unique.
I just created a freelancer profile for myself. Noticed that the second page of the signup process marks some fields as optional but they're required (there's an error if they're kept empty). Also I'm not sure what's the next step. How will companies find me?
Thanks for creating a profile, and letting me know about the fields - they were definitely meant to be optional, will take a look. The next step at the moment is really me working behind the scenes trying to sign some companies up. It's still early days and I need to work on getting some companies on board with this. Once I do, I plan to suggest matching profiles manually while I build a solution for them to browse profiles. But the step after that will be that you'll get invited to talent pools of companies if any are interested.
Just wanted to say that I like your idea and your spirit. I was wondering if you consider a payment option for equity. I think this could get interesting. Or maybe a mixed plan of 50/50.
Thanks, I appreciate it! I just want to make sure I understand your suggestion - is it to allow startups on DevelopmentKitchen to pay contractors/freelancers using equity as well as cash?
EXACTLY :D
I set one, up. What's the next step? I have some legal questions about getting paid by these positions. What's the strategy there?
Thanks for setting up a profile! At the moment, the next steps are for me are to keep building. But I mean this at more than just at a technical level with the web application. I will be looking to get companies on board one by one and allow them to choose profiles they may be interested in to invite to their pool. So, you may not hear anything for a while but hopefully you will get an invitation to join a pool. I also plan to keep posting updates here on IndieHackers.
In terms of legal, I'm trying to take it one step at a time. If you are familiar with contracting and employment, and especially cross-border, you will probably know there is a ton of legal issues involved - employment law, tax law, immigration law, etc. Long term vision is to try and make it really seamless for both contractors and companies - that means take care of the employment and accounting details depending on where both parties are, the work being carried out, and a whole range of other factors. But this is obviously very difficult - lots of individual circumstances and laws make this nearly impossible. At least initially and for a long time, I think the approach will be something slightly better than let everyone deal with making their own tax submissions and payments, etc. But again, it'll be take it one step at a time, based on the countries where I see traction.
"That's different" -- Is not really an answer. Try again :). I signed up, what's the next step? And how will do you handle the legal challenges?
Apologies, I didn't really intend to evade or be nonresponsive here. What I mean is that it's still early stages and the profile creation is really the extent of the implementation right now.
But I am building further - in terms of the web application, the next bits of implementation will probably be for companies - to allow them to create a talent pool, browse profiles and invite folks to their talent pool. Outside the app, the next steps are to begin approaching companies to get them onboard, even if at first they are doing things manually. If you meant what are the next steps for you now that you created a profile, as I say, I will hopefully have some companies who are interested in inviting you to a pool, and you will hear from them. Till then, there isn't really much.
With the legal challenges, again, not trying to be evasive when I say there are lots, and I'm taking it a step at a time. If there is a specific legal question you have in mind, let me know. Maybe I have the answer or it may be something I have yet to figure out.
How does a freelancer get themselves into your system? The site you linked to only seems to be about companies searching for talent?
It's the "Looking for work? Software contractors and freelancers can sign up here" link under the "Start your talent pool" button. You make a very good point of course that the page is written in the language of companies. In my own head, presenting the solution from that side flowed more easily, and I thought it was still clear for freelancers/contractors to understand. But the intention is to create a separate page entirely for freelancers and contractors that tells their side of the story. I'm working on that page and having done the page for companies, it's a lot easier to write.
Ah, I just read the webpage too too fast I guess. I was expecting something more like other websites that have like a "are you a company? are you a contractor?" fork in them
