Time and patience. Create consistent, quality content and distribute it on social. Build your audience and form alliances with others in your niche. MOZ's free SEO content is a really good primer as well. A lot of SEO shares ideas/latest trends on Twitter. I learn little bits here and there just from following their feeds. I mention a few of my faves in the intro of the above article.
