Hi I've recently begin exploring Shopify apps - sold my WooCommerce Plugin biz last year and looking for my next side hustle...
Would love to connect with any other developers who are working in this space...
I'm currently coaching a junior developer who's building Shopify apps. I'm assisting him with the development and helping him understand how the Shopify APIs work. What exactly are you looking for, Simon?
Hi - just really looking for basic tech info.
Compared to WooCommerce there is MUCH less info available. For example, sample apps etc. In the WooCommerce space I could just go into the WordPress plugin store and download some plugins, look at the code etc.
I'll give you an example. I'm thinking about writing an app that modifies the cart based on some criteria (think special offers etc). I think I'm going to have to embed some javascript via the Scrip Tag functionality that will change the cart, as well as build some back end functionality, but I had to piece that together, it was not obvious (or maybe my google skills are not good :) ) and I could still be wrong.
The good news is it feels like the barrier to entry is higher - which is good. The bad news is the barrier to entry is higher!!

@nyrsimon Hi Simon, are you still looking for help? We are currently building Shopify App regarding cart functionality. Definitely can help out with this space.
That's correct. :)
That's also true. You'll host the backend of your app on your own servers (e.g. on Heroku). The backend is interacted with through
I have to agree that it's not always easy to find the API documentation that you need for a given feature, but I've always found it so far. If you're interested in paid coaching, I'd be happy to help you build your app.
I'll send you an email - would be open to discussing....

Did you ever connect with @nikwen? He’s the man, he’s been helping me develop my app. I don’t know much from a coding perspective so he’s been showing me how to do things and coaching me. Great coach!
Thank you for the endorsement, Henry! 🙌
Just replied. Thank you, Simon!
Haven't made a Shopify app yet, but I've been looking into it. How'd you go about the process? Where do you think there is the most opportunity and interested to hear more form others about this market.
I know SHOP is a massive site, and I always see people making stuff for their app store, but for some reason I haven't given it a shot. I guess I just don't have any sense of the types of issues that Shopify users face...
Check out @TalktoHenryJ on Twitter. He's talking a lot about Shopify and how to come up with Shopify app ideas.
The big upside of targetting appstores (OUTSIDE of the mobile appstores like apple appstore and google play) is that you get natural traffic without having to do a lot of arketing. Note this is only true for addon markets like google apps / shopify, etc, not true for mobile app stores where you'll get zero organic traffic.
But you need to be an expert in the platform. If you've never tried to setup an ecommerce site, I don't recommend writing a shopify addon. Become an expert first, then develop your idea.
Shopify is a great place to sharpen your skills. I’m doing it now and I although it hasn’t been an amazing success, I feel like it’s on the way.
Agreed - it makes marketing SUPER easy :)
I have some experience from WooCommerce so the space is not completely alien to me. I need to learn the tech around Shopify (and it seems quite different) . For ideas I start with an area that is already getting traction in the app store and then I get to speak to customers and go from there....
